Aug. 27--In a night of political surprises, Osceola voters elected the first Hispanic to the School Board, while Fred Hawkins Jr. defeated incumbent County Commissioner Bill Lane to become the Republican nominee for the District 5 seat. ||Julius Melendez became the first Hispanic School Board member, avoiding a runoff with John Davis and Deloris McMillon by capturing more than 50 percent of the vote for the District 2 seat. ||It was the first School Board seat in more than a decade to be chosen in district voting, a system that voters approved in January.
