Tricks to Get An "In" With Your Dream Job After College


When looking for a job following college graduation, finding your absolute dream job can be a challenge. You might need to compromise on your childhood daydreams or start off in a lower-paying industry at first, especially as you gain traction and experience. The biggest challenge many graduates face is getting an in with a target employer. When looking for a way to connect with a company for your first job after college, there are several tips to follow. 


Narrow Down Options


As you search for your dream job after college, the first thing you need to do is narrow down your options. If you have a particular job in mind, there are probably several different employers that will offer the type of job that you are looking for. You should try to develop a list of at least five desired employers, with a pool of secondary options as well. Your professors and fellow graduates and alumni might have suggestions for you in this regard.


Find Inside Track


Once you’ve narrowed down the list of employers you would like work for, the next tip would be to find the inside track to one of them. Through LinkedIn and your school's alumni network, it could be easy to find a list of names of people you have a distant connection to. By sending out resumes and emails, you could be able to get the foot in the door that you need to move on to the next round. 


Prepare for Interviews


Once you have gotten an opportunity to apply for and interview for a dream job, the next step is to prepare of the interview. The interview process will often have several stages including a phone interview and at least two or three in-person meetings. Before each interview, you must ensure you fully understand the company, how they fit into the industry, and what they offer consumers. You should also come prepared to ask a number of different intelligent questions. Use your education as past experience and prove you know what they’ll expect of you.


Follow Up


After you have had your interview, it is very important to follow up with each employer. It would also be ideal to send an email within a couple of days after the interview. You should also send any additional information or paperwork the employer requested as promptly as possible. 


After you have graduated from college, the next step in life is to find a d job that can propel you into a career. While it can be hard to get an in with a top employer, there are several tips that can be followed to help you get your foot in the door.
