Job Summary

The Academic Programs Project Manager serves as a member of the Harvard Griffin GSAS Academic Programs team and reports directly to the Dean for Academic Programs. The manager is responsible for serving as an expert on Harvard Griffin GSAS teaching policy and will be familiar with the larger nexus of employment rules and restrictions for GSAS students. The Manager will also need to be familiar with the HGSU contract and the ways in which contract rules apply to appointments and payment. The manager serves as an essential information source to departments, students, and other Harvard schools regarding FAS and Harvard Griffin GSAS rules about FAS Teaching Fellow appointments, policies underlying these appointments, and procedures for seeking exceptions. This role also serves as the project manager for all FAS legislated reviews assigned to Harvard Griffin GSAS and completes work in preparation for, and following, meetings with departments and degree programs under the newly launched cyclical meeting plan prescribed by the GSAS Admissions and Graduate Education (GAGE) report.¿

Position Description

Manage Teaching Fellow Appointment Appointments  

  • Serve as the Harvard Griffin GSAS expert regarding Teaching Fellow (TF) appointment policies and procedures for both Harvard Griffin GSAS staff, students and academic departments. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex TF appointment requests and situations.  
  • Review and approve TF exceptions and communicate decisions regarding exceptions to students and programs. 
  • Reconcile all flagged appointments, evaluate exception requests, pursue questions with the programs and make high-level judgement calls about policy in consultation with the Dean for Academic Programs. 
  • Work closely with the Harvard Griffin GSAS Financial Aid officers to ensure consistent and equitable application of policy, understanding the ways in which teaching may fit into a student’s overall financial package. 
  • Serve as Harvard Griffin GSAS’s liaison to the Instructional Support team in the Office of Undergraduate Education, fielding and reviewing all communication from that office and informing Harvard Griffin GSAS staff, as appropriate. 
  • Direct the workflow of the Special Students and Visiting Fellows Program Coordinator and provide guidance when there is confusion or questions regarding policies and procedures for TF appointments. 

Academic Programs Project Manager 

  • Manage the workflow for all FAS legislated reviews assigned to Harvard Griffin GSAS and led by the Dean for Academic Programs.  
  • Manage all aspects of the review moving forward, including collecting all relevant data and providing initial analysis of data, and will have a hand in creating the final report. 
  • Oversee work of the Academic Programs Coordinator who is responsible for scheduling, setting up, and preparing materials for these legislated review meetings.  
  • Manage action items for the Academic Programs team in support of GSAS Admissions and Graduate Education (GAGE) meetings.  
  • Manage other projects or initiatives for Academic Programs as these new projects and initiatives arise.  

Data Analysis 

  • Analyze Harvard Griffin GSAS teaching data using statistical analysis tools and create reports, as needed and directed, on TF appointment data to inform specific decisions involving teaching policy. 

FAS-Wide Working Groups and Committees 

  • Participate in working groups and serve as Harvard Griffin GSAS TF representative in different FAS-wide meetings. 
  • Represent the interests of Harvard Griffin GSAS in these meetings, and when changes to systems are being considered, this position will ensure that Harvard Griffin GSAS’s needs continue to be supported and will be responsible for rolling out any updates or changes to the GSAS staff.

Basic Qualifications

Five or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count towards experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.  
  • Ability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple and conflicting interests.  
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.  
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion.  
  • Competency using a variety of computer software.  
  • College degree preferred, or an equivalent of education plus relevant experience in an office environment.

Working Conditions

This is an on-campus position based in Cambridge, MA.
