Description
A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information, education, support, and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
Job Responsibilities
- attend breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor
- counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by local WIC program
- Counsel women during clinic and manage a caseload of prenatal and postpartum mothers and makes routine contact with all clients assigned
- Gives breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including providing information about benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and troubleshooting breastfeeding concerns
- Maintains accurate and confidential records on all clients
- Appropriately refers mothers to other resources within the clinic
- Attends and assists with breastfeeding classes (if applicable) as well as breastfeeding support groups (if applicable)
- attend staff meetings and breastfeeding trainings as required
- May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned
- Be available to work in clinic setting 3 days per week
Minimum Qualifications
*Has (in the past or currently) breastfed at least one baby for a period of at least six months
*Has been or is currently a WIC participant
*Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience
*Can work approximately 20 hours per week
*Has a cell phone and is willing to be on call and accept phone calls at home and after hours (agency may provide some cell phone expense reimbursement to offset the cost of work related calls)
*Has reliable transportation
