Job Summary
The UK College of Medicine is currently seeking a Professor and Chair for the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Science. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Medicine and has responsibility for the overall strategic leadership, direction, and management for the Department and is charged with the growth and development of research and teaching excellence of the Department and will oversee research, education and other departmental activities. The Chair must also foster and support research in basic, translational, and clinical research in alignment with the vision and mission of the University and oversee the continuing education of the Department’s faculty and overall educational mission. The Chair serves as an important spokesperson for UK’s Pharmacology and Nutritional Science research and educational activities at the local, regional, and national levels.
Expectations for Leadership
Among the responsibilities assigned to this position, the Chair is expected to give particular attention to the following leadership opportunities:
- Expand the research portfolio of the Department with a focus on integrative funding opportunities
- Enhance the Department’s position through thoughtful financial and administrative stewardship
- Provide Mentorship for all Departmental Members
- Leverage existing centers, infrastructure and research strengths to enhance the stature and reputation of the Department and UKCOM
- Support all students across the Department’s diverse programs
Preferred Professional Experience and Attributes
The ideal candidate will have:
- A distinguished record of actively funded research, with national and international stature.
- Demonstrated leadership success in a basic or translational sciences department or division, an interdisciplinary institute/center, or an academic entity of comparable size and scope.
- Successful track record of development of faculty and students into successful, independent careers.
- A national reputation as an academic leader, with significant current or recent sponsored research funding as a principal investigator.
- A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, develop people, work collaboratively and take appropriate business risks to achieve goals.
- Experience in the development and successful implementation of new research programs.
- Proven track record of working collaboratively across disciplines, and across departmental, college and institutional lines.
- Has a proven ability to lead and provide visionary leadership in a complex environment.
- Has a broad and thoughtfully considered approach to leading a basic science department reflective of current research funding and academic trends.
- Has demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in building research initiatives that are collaborative and support translational research efforts.
- Has a proven track record as an outstanding scientist and administrative leader demonstrated by inclusive leadership style, collaboration, integrity, judgment and strong interpersonal skills to deal with the diverse challenges facing modern academic departments.
- Has experience with graduate education and a vision for success in future educational challenges.
- Has effective interpersonal and communication skills; has to work well with others. Must be able to generate trust through listening and understanding.
- Demonstrates a leadership style that enjoys interacting with people and can easily connect with faculty and staff in the department, centers of research, across disciplines and among external entities in the community.
- Demonstrates the ability to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and scientists; has worked effectively with program leadership; ability to effectively delegate appropriately.
- Has shown evidence of progressive responsibility for developing and administering organizational budgets and understands how they relate to research initiatives, faculty affairs, undergraduate and graduate education, and interdisciplinary programs.
- Has a philosophy of collaboration and teamwork in interactions within and across departments; has shown the ability to successfully support multidisciplinary efforts and centers in a complex environment.
- Has evidence of philanthropic experience or willingness to partner with philanthropic efforts of the UKCOM.
- Has shown an understanding of the critical importance and synergy between education, research, and scholarly activity, as well as the interdependent relationships inherent in a health science center.
- Demonstrates effective relationship building skills and is respectful of others; collegial.
