Society Insurance is seeking an experienced a Commercial Underwriter III to join our team. This position will develop and maintain a profitable book of business consisting of primarily small-business accounts by acquiring, evaluating, and analyzing information relative to risks to making selection and pricing. This book will include in part underwriting: bars, restaurants, breweries/wineries, food manufacturing, contractors, habitational, grocery, auto repair, lessors risk, retail, wholesale, and more!
About the Role
- Determines degree of risk by evaluating renewal and new business accounts for acceptability based on profit potential, assigned underwriting authority, and company guidelines.
- Communicates internally and externally using written and verbal skills through the use of multimedia channels that may include phone, email, intranet, social media, and on-site visits.
- Attracts business through building and managing positive professional relationships with agents and Regional Sales Managers; determines appropriate communication methods to assist in building positive relationships including travel to agents’ offices.
- Builds and executes an annual agency management production and profit plan for the assigned territory, supported by cultivating relationships through phone contact, written correspondence, and on-site visits with agents and insureds.
- Acts as a liaison helping customers solve problems with departments such as claims, billing, auditing, etc.
- Reviews and analyzes Risk Control surveys and communicates opportunities for improvement in order to maximize profitability and assist policyholders in managing their individual risks and exposures.
- Participates in the education of Underwriting staff by coordinating and conducting specified training or participating in the training for new hires as assigned.
- Offers departmental support by mentoring, coaching, and developing the Underwriting staff.
- Leads, participates in, or completes special projects as assigned.
- Identifies improvement opportunities and participates in change-management initiatives.
- Contributes to team effort by supporting business direction, assisting others in the department, and demonstrating a willingness to contribute above and beyond the responsibilities of the role.

What it Will Take
- Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, or related field and 5 years of commercial multi-line underwriting experience (all 5 of the following: property, general liability, auto, workers’ compensation, and umbrella) – OR – 7 years of experience successfully underwriting insurance programs that are similar to Society’s core products.
- Basic competency with desktop applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Continuing education in the insurance field (example: CPCU, CIC, ARM, AU).
- Experience working in a remote (semi-, fully, or hybrid) work environment.
