Position Description

The Director, Network Engineering provides valuable strategic and operational support to our faculty in support of Harvard Business school's (HBS’s) mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world.

As a member of the HBS IT organization, the Director will report to the Senior Managing Director, Enterprise Engineering & Architecture (EE&A). The Director, Network Engineering, will lead the development of the overall network strategy and manage the execution of that plan. EE&A is responsible for the strategy, architecture, selection, implementation, and maintenance of software, compute, storage, and network solutions to support the business needs of HBS.

As a member of the EE&A management team, the Director will collaborate with colleagues and campus stakeholders to provide technical leadership, support, and network solutions to meet the needs of HBS today and into the future. With a Boston campus with over 37 buildings, and 2,000 MBA students, over 12,000 Executive Education students annually, and 1,600 faculty, staff, and doctoral students, this position will be responsible for the wired and wireless campus network environment which extends to multiple cloud environments as well as stretches globally to remote campuses. The Director will develop a multiyear strategy for the network which aligns with and is responsive to business needs, and then will lead the execution of that plan, while managing and monitoring daily operational issues and projects.

The Director, Network Engineering will serve as a key advisor to HBS IT colleagues and departments to support and to maintain the stability and architecture for growth and enhanced capabilities. The Director is responsible for providing the vision, roadmaps, and budget plans in support of network and telecommunications needs. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing and supporting large complex network environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the network team and vendors’ staff in support of daily operational work as well as project deliverables
  • Provide network technology leadership, vision, and solutions that address business needs, partnering closely with IT colleagues and HBS departments
  • Develop, document, maintain, and manage a multiyear network strategy which includes a lifecycle management program
  • Develop and communicate annual operating and multiyear capital budget that aligns with the network strategy, as well as managing activities to align with this budget
  • Ensure ongoing documentation of critical network and telecommunications assets, processes, and procedures
  • Manage vendor relationships and contracts for the procurement of hardware, software and services as well as execution against these contracts
  • Work with the University’s enterprise networking team to develop and align strategies and services for network and voice services that effectively address community needs
  • Contribute and participate as part of the cloud planning program to develop monitoring and other management systems to support the network reliability and performance in a hybrid multi-cloud environment
  • Participate in appropriate University and School governance committees ensuring a clear understanding of future business goals and align with appropriate network solutions
  • Lead by example, work with each team member to develop clear goals and annual training objectives, and reinforcing the HBS IT values
  • Build strong relationships and collaborate with HBS departments to develop innovative solutions for process/development related problems, with industry best practices and trends
  • Ensure that HBS systems and the information stored within them are secure and protected in accordance with Harvard’s policies and standards, and industry best practices
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following are preferred:

  • Strong working knowledge of network technologies, cloud connectivity, with extensive experience in the planning, design, and implementation of large-scale network environments
  • Technical command and expertise in Cisco network switches, routers and protocols, wireless deployments, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), vlan, and fiber deployments
  • Possess the ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing to people with varying degrees of technical expertise
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a technical staff and lead, influence and motivate others
  • Enterprise networking experience in a higher education setting
  • Exposure to networking connectivity into cloud environments (e.g., AWS (Amazon Web Services), Azure, and Oracle)
  • Infrastructure experience including design and deployment, lifecycle management, planning, and operations. Experience developing and managing both operational and capital budgets, including experience in managing vendor contracts and licensing

Certificates and Licenses

The following are preferred:

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certificate in Security, Enterprise Infrastructure, and/or Wireless

Working Conditions

  • Additional support outside of regularly scheduled hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holiday breaks, may occasionally be required
  • Must be available by personal cell phone during business hours, and occasionally off-hours (stipend will be provided)
  • Must participate in a shared 24x7x365 on call rotation with other IT staff

Additional Information

This position is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA-based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite at least three days per week and for departments to provide onsite coverage Monday - Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
