Overview

The Global Government Affairs group within the General Counsel’s Organization seeks a Director, U.S. Regulatory Relations (USRR) – Governance, Operations and Analytics (GOA). As the principal intermediary between the company and the supervisory personnel of its federal banking regulators, USRR plays a critical strategic role in driving a cohesive approach to supervision, including by identifying focus areas of the regulators across engagements and preparing senior executives and the boards of both American Express (AXP) and American Express National Bank (AENB) for interactions with agency personnel. USRR partners closely with the Regulatory Exam Lifecycle Management (RELM) team within Global Risk and Compliance to deliver on this promise.

The successful candidate will report to the VP, Governance, Operations and Analytics and will play a key role in the newly created GOA team with responsibility to define and deliver enhanced processes, capabilities and resources to support regulatory engagements, including through use of automated solutions. The team collaborates closely with the broader USRR team and other key partners and stakeholders to drive enhanced connectivity, insights, and preparedness for regulatory interactions.

Key Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with defining and implementing best practices for regulatory interactions through innovation of practices and protocols.
  • Identify, plan and implement process improvement initiatives through workflow mapping, recommending solutions, and optimization of technology processes to deliver enhanced USRR outputs.
  • Develop and drive thematic analysis of regulatory interactions using automated solutions where possible.
  • Partner with the Technology teams to design and implement solutions to more efficiently connect the dots across regulatory interactions to better detect and drive awareness of emerging themes, focus areas, insights and potential sensitivities, and develop thematic analysis of regulatory interactions.
  • Facilitate change management activities to ensure smooth adoption of new processes and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop automated solutions to support the reporting team with data analytics and visualization.
  • Assist in the design of new resources (dashboards, issue spotlights, etc.) to build broad internal awareness of regulatory focus areas and expectations.
  • Own support for certain regulatory engagements requiring project management capabilities such as (but not limited) assisting in the preparation of Technology / Operational Incident Notification to the US federal regulators.
  • Partner with the Regulatory Engagement Lifecycle Management team in the development of training and education to support preparedness for regulatory interactions.
  • Maintain governance of USRR policies and procedures, uplift the regulatory calendar management process and various other functions.
  • Through appropriate external engagement, maintain awareness of regulator expectations and best practices for regulatory engagements
  • Partner with Control Management to drive the risk and control mapping exercise for USRR.
  • Partner with Technology teams on the maintenance and governance of the Central Application for all the US federal regulator portals ensuring adherence to technical standards.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, including leading operations in support of regulatory supervision, preferably at a large U.S. bank
  • Experience with process automation / improvement tools and technologies, and an ability to drive the development and maintenance of new solutions for USRR in partnership with Technology colleagues.
  • Strong organization and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with resilience, commitment and accountability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills (written/oral) with proven ability to influence and negotiate with colleagues/partners, to deliver desired outcomes without direct authority.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to define and strategize areas of opportunity.
  • Experience developing clear, concise and visually effective information resources, such as presentation or briefing materials for senior leaders
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment, operating with a sense of urgency as needed
  • Bachelor's degree required; relevant advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in Tableau, SharePoint, Visio and Microsoft Office Suit preferred.

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
