Teaching and Learning
Job Summary
Focus on editing, revision, and quality control of online and digital course materials. Provide high-quality, accessible materials that follow universal design practices and adhere to a unified instructional brand.Duties & Responsibilities
Content Editing
- Copyediting course documents, scripts, and transcripts originally written or spoken by faculty and other instructional content creators
- Using APA style to create proper attribution for sources used in course materials
- Clarifying instructions to help learners complete assignments and other activities
Quality Control
- Thoroughly reviewing settings and configuration of course sites in the learning management system
- Reviewing and remediating course materials, videos, slides, and instructional websites in conjunction with the learning design team
- Reviewing course materials for adherence to digital accessibility standards
Quality Assurance
- Defining, adopting, and maintaining a style guide specific to Gies instructional content. This style guide determines both usage mechanics and a consistent tone in the message
- Assisting with the design and development of tutorials and documentation of quality control processes
- Providing training and resources on Teaching & Learning’s quality standards
- Communicating with faculty and staff regarding updates to course materials
- Coordinating and reviewing the work of hourly copy editors
Other

Minimum Qualifications
A.Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy
AND
Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
OR
B. Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities
AND
Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, linguistics, classics, language arts, education, or instructional design.
Experience:
- Experience working in higher education or with learning management systems
- Experience creating/adapting on-screen written content for multimedia presentations
- Strong collaboration experience with graphic designers for digital publishing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language
- Mastery of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, and ability to give constructive feedback and suggestions
- Proficiency with applying the principles of style guides to course materials
- Ability to remain detail-oriented and focused when processing large amounts of text
- Facility to collaborate with learning designers, videographers, graphic designers, and other instructional content creators
- Strong computer software skills, especially Microsoft Office
- Basic awareness of legal issues for publishing like plagiarism and copyright
- Basic awareness of accessibility standards for ADA compliance
- Knowledge of digital media production
- Experience reviewing course content within a learning management system
- Experience adapting on-screen written content for multimedia presentations
- Experience reviewing and remediating content for ADA compliance
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3289 - Instructional Development Specialist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience while also considering internal equity. The budget salary for this position is $57,000 to $59,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
Hybrid or fully remote work options may be available for this position.
