DISCOVER THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • Interpret for agency Deaf Professionals and consumers as needed.
  • Coordinate and Schedule interpreting services for ADS Deaf professionals, vendors, and consumers.
  • Track Requested interpreters within agency scheduling system.
  • Authorize and pay for interpreting services.
  • Assess language needs for all Deaf staff and Consumers to appropriately match interpreting services.
  • Monitor and assess the current and projected interpreting needs of the agency.
  • Provide supervision of ADS/BRS staff interpreters.
  • Provide training for staff and vendors regarding interpreting services.
  • Knowledge of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In the Department of Aging and Disability Services this class is accountable for serving as an official interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing and/or acting as a working supervisor of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing engaged in interpreter services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


  • Plans unit workflow and determines priorities;
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews statewide sign language interpreter services for the Department;
  • Establishes and maintains unit procedures;
  • Serves as official interpreter for the department at business meetings, hearings and special sessions and to the Advisory Board or designee in their relations with the Governor, General Assembly, the public, local and state agencies and organizations;
  • Provides staff training and assistance including monitoring and assessing current and projected needs;
  • Provides technical and procedural support to staff;
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;
  • Acts as a liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials such as third party providers, rehabilitation services agencies and attorneys regarding unit policies and procedures;
  • Prepare reports and correspondence;
  • Coordinates and assists in the planning of sign language access requirements for staff and consumers at training workshops, public meetings and Department functions;
  • Interprets as needed;
  • May assist with the coordination of Registry of Interpreter;
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards;
  • May prepare or assist in preparation of unit budget;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY


  • Considerable knowledge of all forms of interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing;
  • Knowledge of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;

    • establish and maintain harmonious relations with those contacted in the work;
    • assess sign language proficiency;

    • use computer software and systems;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain a National Interpreting Certification and be a registered Interpreter with the State of Connecticut in accordance with Sec. 46a-33a of the Connecticut General Statutes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Fluent in American Sign Language
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, and OneDrive
  • Experience organizing, prioritizing, and managing more than one task while meeting deadlines
  • Experience coordinating schedules
  • Experience managing invoices
  • Experience working or interpreting in Vocational Rehabilitation Programs
  • Experience managing conflicts with vendors or coworkers

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license. At the time of appointment candidates must have a motor vehicle driving history satisfactory to the Commissioner of Aging and Disability Services.
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to travel.
