Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Manager, Science Labs supports and managesthe natural science laboratories at an LSC campus.¿ Manages materials, supplies, equipment, and overall laboratory experiences of all of the natural science labs offered at the campus, including but not limited to biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, and physics. Maintains close communication and coordination with Faculty and Instructors to ensure lab materials and experiences coincide well with lecture materials.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Directs, manages, and coordinates natural science laboratory activities, ensuring activities and objectives are carried out effectively. Plans and develops methods for implementing all natural science laboratory activities.
  • Manages the natural science laboratories to ensure that implementation and prescribed lab activities are carried out in accordance with specified objectives.
  • Works with faculty to create natural science laboratory schedules.
  • Responsible for coordination of required open labs, including curriculum design and attendance.
  • Maintains inventory and quality assurance of natural science lab items, including but not limited to chemicals, media, minerals, slides, microscopes, telescopes, videos, software, models, preserved and living specimens, equipment, and learning lab materials.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises lab assistants and student assistants.
  • Responsible for full budget preparation for science labs, including planning and facilitation of annual equipment and supply purchases. Orders lab equipment and prepares requisitions for the timely arrival of all natural science lab related materials, and control expenditures in accordance with budget allocations
  • Directs and monitors laboratory safety protocols, including but not limited to monitoring regulated and bio-hazardous materials and ensuring the proper disposal of such materials, developing hygiene plans, setting-up and maintaining Right to Know Centers, and ensuring easy access to MSDS documents.
  • Analyzes and evaluates effectiveness of natural science labs, making improvements to where needed. Keep current with new technologies and safety regulations
  • Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of infection control policies and procedures and safety regulations (EPA, OSHA)
  • Broad knowledge of the sciences and related safety protocols for the successful handling of day-to-day science lab operations
  • Strong computer applications skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships, both within the LSC employees and with outside vendors
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and also cooperatively as a member of a team
  • Ability to provide dynamic and proactive educational leadership
  • Proven effectiveness in allocating and managing resources

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment, as well as a variety of specialized equipment generally associated with natural science labs
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in air conditioned lab and office settings. Contact with lab equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals is standard and health/safety precautions must be observed at all times

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Specialization in field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in a related science field
  • At least 3 years of practical, hands-on and management experience
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
Salary

Hiring salary range is $54,528 - $62,707

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions.  Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.  Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer.  The information outlined below will provide the Office of Human Resources everything needed to determine an accurate starting salary.
