Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Applied Mechanics Engineer to work in our Reactor Project Engineering department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

You will apply engineering principles to analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems for the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) test beds that will be used to support reactor experiments. Perform linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analysis of such factors as stress, force, vibration, and material plasticity. Compare results to the provisions of governing codes, standards, and orders. Perform dynamic seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components, including soil-structure interaction analyses.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with a diverse team of scientists and engineers on a test bed for reactor experiments.
  • Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach and applying digital engineering tools for tracking requirements and design parameters.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to develop a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Provide support to design teams in development of alternatives analysis, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment summaries and evaluations, specifications, drawings, supporting analysis and calculations, and engineering design files.
  • Perform structural mechanics designs including evaluations/analyses of the behavior of structures, systems and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions to support operating advanced nuclear reactors. Provide support to Safety Analysis through simulation of postulated accidents and their structural/mechanical consequences.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards. Document analyses observing approved engineering process requirements.
  • Have expertise in ASME, ASCE, and other mechanical and structural codes and their relationship to DOE requirements for various safety class systems.
  • Perform calculations and develop models to investigate nonlinear behavior of nuclear facilities and systems to seismic ground motion and advanced nonlinear site response analysis technics
  • Work both in isolation and as a member of a team. Provide input in a constructive manner to others while maintaining a positive and professional relationship
  • Support our business planning efforts. Be a advisor to management in area of technical expertise. May be spokesperson to customer in area of expertise.
