Pay Range
$165,100.00-$227,000.00 AnnualThis is the base salary pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire. Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors. In addition, this position is eligible for an incentive bonus.
Position Overview
The purpose of the Phenix City Plant Manager’s role is to provide the overall management and leadership for a manufacturing facility. The Plant Manager will be responsible for managing all functions of a manufacturing facility including Environmental, Health & Safety, Human Resources, Finance, SIOP, Maintenance, Capital and Physical Distribution.
Plant Overview
The Phenix City, AL facility is primarily a 24x7 x 365 operation, though some departments work a variety of alternate schedules to satisfy our customer’s needs; we are a manufacturer of a number of mineral wool insulation products including industrial boards of various densities, batts for use in commercial building applications and a wide range of pipe insulation. Salary, hourly and agency labor total approximately 170 individuals.
Your Day to Day:
- Maintain safety, product quality, and manufacturing effectiveness through daily guidance and priority setting
- There are approximately 12 staff roles directly reporting to the Plant Manager plus two dotted line reports
- Create policy and implement procedures for plant operations
- Drive continuous improvement, which will include a firm understanding of customer expectations as well as the plant’s manufacturing process capability
- Support and promote safe practices and environmental commitments in alignment with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements to the betterment of our employees, community and JM
- Lead, manage and develop managers and employees to ensure the necessary capabilities and culture are in place to maintain effective operations including establishing direction, gaining commitment, delegating and building organizational capabilities
- Evaluate financial performance and take appropriate actions
- Develop and coach staff that is committed to the JM value structure and achievement of business goals
- Coordinate the activities of the facility and resources to meet business needs
- Focus on continuing to improve the competitiveness of operations by continuous improvement of people, business processes, and technologies
- Implement recommendations, drive change initiatives, recognize customer commitment and drive activity for continued quality improvement
- Establish and manage activities in conjunction with senior management for the purpose of meeting both short- and long-term plant goals
- Improve efficiency and capacity through capital expenditure (investing opportunities to increase the plant capacity and ability to produce additional products)
- Design, implement and manage measurement tracking and reporting systems for the plant
- Embrace and drive JM’s emphasis on safety and environmental practices to either meet or exceed company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements
- Represent JM to the external community and agencies
- Create a compelling manufacturing operations vision that aligns with the plant and JM’s goals and core values
- Participates actively in all daily management standing meetings and other staff level meetings
- This role is primarily traditional workdays (Monday through Friday, less holidays), 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM; however, depending on projects and other situations, manager must be prepared to occasionally work other schedules as necessary to complete their tasks; further, this manager must be available 24x7 to respond to significant events in the plant
- May be required to perform other related duties as assigned
What You Bring to the Team:
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in increasing levels of responsibility in a manufacturing environment and 3 years plant manager experience
- Engineering or Business degree preferred, MBA a plus
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
- Direct experience with production, engineering, warehouse, maintenance and quality functions in a plant environment
- Proven collaborative and participative management skills
- Experience in leading and motivating teams of 50 or more salaried and hourly employees
- Continuous operation flows and/or 24x7 operations
- Proven financial skills and business acumen
- Proven knowledge and success with a continuous improvement process discipline such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Keppner-Tregoe, etc.
- Experience with environmental permitting, regulatory agencies and plant safety programs
- Air permitting, specifically preferred, Title-V a plus
- Experience in managing capital programs
- Experience in maintaining a union-free workforce
- Experience in managing a union workforce a plus
- Strong technical and mechanical aptitude
- Strong leadership skills
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and set direction
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Microsoft Access & Microsoft Viso a plus
- Ability to interface at all levels of the organization, both internally and externally
- Proven problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to understand business principles
- May be required to lift, carry, push, or pull up to and including 25 pounds
- Other Preferred Skills / Experiences:
- Experience with ISO or other highly structured business operating system models
- SAP or other ERP system experience a plus
- High intellectual capacity and tenacity
- Proven ability to plan, organize and execute projects
Physical Demands
Ability to reach all work areas in the plant (i.e. climb ladders, negotiate catwalks, handle heights to 50 feet, etc.), to lift twist and turn up to 50 lb. (i.e. open and close large valves, inspect equipment, and non-emergency equipment as needed.
Work Environment
This job is in an industrial, manufacturing environment. Employee will have a workspace in the general office, but will spend a portion of their day in the plant. The job requires working frequently around and with heavy machinery with moving mechanical parts, and mobile equipment. The environment is not climate controlled, and employees must be able to work in environments that may be extremely hot and humid or cold depending upon the operation and the season. Walking surfaces can be wet, dusty, and uneven. Areas of the building where work must be done have high noise levels, vibration, and/or fumes. Some working areas contain the presence of airborne particles which can irritate the skin or eyes. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment which includes safety-toed shoes, ear protection, eye protection and in certain areas may be required to where dust masks, gloves, respirators, or head protection.
