
Power Plant Operator/Facility Mechanic
Position Purpose
Reporting to Vice President of Operations and under general supervision of Director of Power Plant, maintain and supervise heating systems operations, with special responsibility for emergency service, maintenance of equipment, and installation. Compensation for this position includes, and requires, residing in on-campus housing in order to respond to off hour emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities/Functions
• Operate boilers and controls.
• Train and supervise students on operation and repair of equipment as assigned.
• Provide routine and emergency services.
• Troubleshoot, supervise, and/or make repairs on gas and fuel pressure lines, boilers, heaters, pumps, compressors, motors, controllers, reducing station, heat exchangers, generators diesel/gas.
• Schedule and supervise external contractors hired for work related to heating systems.
• Direct repairs to boiler work such as tube, header and brickwork, casing work and flue work.
• Install heating system equipment as required.
• Order oil and gas deliveries.
• Inspect fuel tanks.
• Prepare and maintain records on treatment, oil, gas and chemicals consumption and steam and hot water production.
• Cooperate and work with State and other inspector's, as required.
• Participate in institutional professional development and training.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Assist with general campus facilities maintenance as necessary
Qualifications (Skills and Abilities Required)
• High School diploma or a GED
• 5 years of boiler operations experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of combustion and mechanical process equipment and process diagrams such as P&ID’s
• Demonstrated strong communication skills in both written and oral form including following operating procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and on teams with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize computer systems and software applications (i.e., Allen Bradley equipment, Rockwell software, Windows) and the capability to learn others such as DCS control systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge of or the ability to learn local, state and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, RCRA, NRC, and DOT).
• Work requires the ability to climb ladders, wear PPE including respirators, hearing protection, and fall protection
• Handle/move material and equipment in excess of 25lbs. (i.e. 55-gallon drums).
• Position is classified as “essential personnel” this requires to be occasionally on call to respond to operational or emergency situations.
Working Conditions
- This position will primarily be working in all areas across the college campus in performing a wide range of tasks and responsibilities, both indoors and out.
- Must be able to work outdoors, holidays, weekends and overtime as business needs demand.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and handles the physical demands of the job including standing and bending, operating equipment for long periods, working in all weather conditions (heat and cold).
Supervisory Responsibility
- No direct supervisory requirements although the ability to be lead point of contact for facilities team is expected.
