Safety Specialist I

UIW Mission


Position Summary
The Safety Specialist I is responsible for providing technical assistance in the routine application and enforcement of safety rules, regulations, and standards in the areas of Environmental Health and Safety. The Safety Specialist I reports to EHS Manager.

Essential Functions


Job Duties


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively exercises independent judgment and decision-making authority over assigned areas of responsibility
  • Working knowledge of building and fire safety codes, OSHA regulations, worker safety issues and other standards related to life safety practices in an educational environment.
  • Must be able to work safely in an environment containing hazardous chemicals using personal protective equipment/safety measures.
  • Ability to organize, plan and develop appropriate procedure to establish compliance objectives.
  • Experience training groups of varying sizes.
  • Computer proficient in various software packages, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, required to communicate with various levels within the university including faculty.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to travel using UIW vehicle to various site locations within the San Antonio Metro area.
  • Ability to properly wear full-face elastomeric respirator, as appropriate, which may require passing a medical evaluation.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Work Experience
One (1) year of experience in the field of safety, preferably related to laboratory safety.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational/Environmental Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry or related sciences.
  • Two (2) years of experience in laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, emergency management, or related field in an academic setting.
  • ICS 100/200/300/400/700/800.
  • OSHA 10/30 General Industry or Construction.
  • Certified Safety Professional (ASP/CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Must have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.

Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals and special events such as games and required safety drills.Must be available 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency response.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs of equipment and/or waste materials. Ability to assist with manipulating or moving 55-gallon drums weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to inspect and/or retrieve EHS materials.
  • Ability to push/pull equipment carts holding up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to actively engage in community events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campus and laboratory spaces while actively engaging faculty, staff, and current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
  • May require quick response in emergency situations which may require ambulation, crouching, crawling, climb stairs/ladders.
  • Must have good hearing to hear safety alarms and sirens.
  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, plumbing or other hazards including biological and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces.
  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Ability to properly utilize/wear Personal Protective Equipment to include the full-face elastomeric respirator.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and variable working environments-hot/damp/cold.
