Senior Telco Ecosystem Engineer (Flexible Location)

Job Description

At SUSE, we believe every business is on a journey of digital transformation, and that transformation can be enhanced and accelerated by open-source innovation. SUSE products and our processes are designed around the collective wisdom of our customers, community, partners, and employees. Edge is a fast-growing business unit within SUSE that combines Business Critical Linux and Enterprise Container Management (Rancher) technologies and solutions to address business opportunities within edge compute and telecommunications scenarios.

SUSE’s Edge infrastructure platform provides retail, manufacturing, industrial, telco, and other edge market segments with a mission-critical environment for deploying applications on, and managing the lifecycle of, remote edge devices. As part of our continued expansion into the telecommunications market we’re looking for a Senior Telco Ecosystem Engineer to work alongside critical partners on their strategic telecommunications platforms and integrations that are built on, or alongside, SUSE’s Edge for Telco platform.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for building long-term relationships with key industry partners in the telecommunications realm, ensuring the strongest possible technical alignment to deliver highly successful converged solutions for network operators and other telecommunications customers. You will be responsible for understanding the technical requirements and driving internal alignment, engineering prioritisation, and coordination of cross-vendor feature delivery. In addition, you will be responsible for building technical materials (e.g. demo’s and other technical marketing assets), performing integration, validation, and troubleshooting of the solution, and become an advocate, both internally and within the community, of the solutions you’re building.

The role requires an individual who combines experience with the typical requirements and buying practices of the telecommunications market with a knowledge of Kubernetes and telco-grade cloud native open-source infrastructure software. You will be a key player in assisting with the delivery (and the partner experience) of telco solutions built on-top of Kubernetes and Linux, and your expertise will assist in supporting infrastructure that is rich enough to host complex applications but flexible enough to scale from hundreds to millions of instances. The successful candidate will have a strong technical background with broad knowledge of system design in the telecommunications space, and be comfortable in engaging directly with partner teams, ideally in a very technical and hands-on delivery capacity.

At SUSE, we are strongly committed to open-source, and we contribute to numerous free and open projects and initiatives. We embrace and believe in the open-source innovation and business models. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and be part of various open-source projects; you will work within a team that is collaborating together with the communities for these projects and strive to continuously advance the state of the art.

Responsibilities:

  • Builds long-term relationships and drives technical alignment with key telecommunications partners at the global level
  • Identifies implementation requirements and helps set engineering prioritisation through the product teams via integration planning
  • Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; integrates suggestions, updates, and innovations into overall architecture
  • Works closely with the partners on conveying roadmap details and coordination of feature requests
  • Validates and troubleshoots technical implementations and integrations to maximise product quality and feedback to the partner
  • Works closely with the QA teams to ensure that partner solutions are thoroughly and regularly validated to drive customer satisfaction
  • Builds technical materials such as documentation, demo’s, white papers, blogs, and other materials to help showcase the integrations
  • Attends industry, community, and partner events to advocate for the converged solutions
  • Where feasible, raises bug reports, implements code fixes, improves product documentation, and implements further tests
  • Develops organisation-wide architectures and methodologies for design and development of complex products, platforms, systems, software, and technology across multiple engineering disciplines, platforms and organisations across the company
  • Identifies and evaluates new technologies, innovations, and outsourced development partner relationships for alignment with technology roadmap and business value; creates plans for integration and update into architecture
  • Leverages recognised domain expertise, business acumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business leadership, outsourced development partners, and industry standards groups
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less- experienced staff members to set an example of engineering design innovation and excellence

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or similar.
  • Typically 10+ years technical hands-on experience, ideally in a telecommunications or cloud-native capacity.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in the telecommunications sector and knowledge of the market would be highly preferred
  • Experience in working directly with customers and partners in a technical capacity
  • Ability to effectively communicate product architectures, design proposals and negotiate options at business unit and executive levels.
  • Deep-dive knowledge and experience in Linux, Kubernetes, virtualisation, and networking, with an appreciation of the constraints of edge computing
  • Extensive experience in systems performance tuning, ideally with experience in realtime kernel and latency-sensitive applications
  • Using, evaluating, and developing appropriate engineering design tools and software packages.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Evaluating and selecting forms of empirical analysis, modelling and testing methodologies to validate product designs and specifications
  • History of innovation with examples of developing new technologies and practices for designs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a mastery of the English language
