Position Description

This is a supervised role, overseen by an experienced app and backend developer, engaging initially in a website rework for a research platform that needs a full website tech stack upgrade to modern expectations, libraries, and Patterns. The role will include self-directed web design and UI/UX development, substantial web app development, and coordination and development with a Django Python backend.  The position may include original data visualizations, and some iOS and Android UI/UX development or guidance. This role will include some direct training across all relevant platforms.
Additional duties may include:

  • Mobile app design, supervised upkeep of and test-building for multiple code stacks, and eventually new feature development.
  • Work with the Senior Operations Manager, Senior Software Engineer (Eli Jones), and other team members to identify and perform platform maintenance, bug tracking and fixing, and to identify priorities for new feature development.
  • Development of complex automated testing.
  • Create, refine, maintain, and document software development processes and best practices; help with development of technical documents, online tutorials, and public presentations of the platform.
  • Perform other software and web development duties as assigned.

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of 6 months from the position’s start date, with the possibility of extension.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a part-time, benefits eligible position with a schedule of 20 hours/week.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum two years’ additional post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or related field; or demonstrable expertise in areas directly referenced in this document.
  • Three years of software development experience with web technologies and platforms.  Experience in modern frontend web development, iOS development, and ui/ux development
  • Specific experience with frontend web development, applications design, ui/ux design, React or other modern web frameworks, and some Python experience
  • Experience in Javascript (and/or Typescript etc.)
  • Experience with the open source Beiwe research platform and/or Tableau Server are a plus
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment, as well as mobile device technologies
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and experience acting as a trusted advisor
  • Preferred experience in Tableau server and/or mobile data collection applications
  • Attention to detail, strong communication skills, excellent time management skills

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Work Format Details

This position is eligible for 100% remote work. Employees may work from any of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
