As part of the Global Merchant & Network Services group (GMNS), the Network & Acquirer Solutions (NAS) team is at the core of American Express, uniquely positioned to support every business unit and customer across the Enterprise. The American Express Network enables over $1.6 trillion in annual spend, serving our Issuers and Acquirers in more than 170 markets worldwide. We are driving a strategic, multi-year Enterprise Payments program to bring all payments together into a center of excellence to drive operational excellence for payment execution, enable innovative payment products, services, and capabilities to be built effectively and efficiently, support our BU strategies more closely, and deliver on our customers’ evolving payment needs.
About the Role
This newly created role of Director, Enterprise Payments Strategy is an exciting opportunity to establish and drive Enterprise Payments transformation, vision, priorities and innovation. The incumbent will be an integral leader within a large scale, enterprise-wide program established to redesign our payment execution model, strengthen company’s leadership positions, secure best in class payments processing supporting core American Express’s business, build for the future use cases and provide ultimate customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
In partnership with Enterprise Payments Strategy Director:
- Partner with the product team, to define long-term Enterprise Payments strategy, including product evolution, new use cases and optimized operating model, based on market trends and the company’s business priorities.
- Assess the current Enterprise Payments landscape by compiling an inventory of all non-card money movement use cases. Maintain and update the inventory as needed.
- Align the Enterprise Payments product management and product development framework with the NAS New Product Development Process (NPD).
- Formulate a viewpoint on Direct Clearing strategy based on analysis and assessment of all relevant costs, regulations, challenges and risks (operational, reputational, payments processing).
- Develop the optimal clearing and settlement model proposal for the American Express products and payment types in alignment with the largest opportunities, and priorities.
- Identify key business use cases for American Express's engagement with the RTP, FedNow, FPS networks and evaluate the potential to offer instant payments solutions globally.
- Assess key market trends, competitive landscape, VOC and identify potential opportunities for American Express innovation within existing use cases or beyond. Build business cases for the key opportunities.
- Evaluate the opportunities for American Express to engage with digital currencies, focusing on potential use cases, and strategic advantages.
- Partnership with internal innovation team (Digital Labs) on possible new product prototypes and ideation.
- Create internal Payment Knowledge Center, educational portal giving information on different payment types, market trends, payments taxonomy, and innovation.
- Support cross-enterprise industry trends collaboration forum.
- Stay abreast of new payment regulations and payments networks rule changes, determine impact to the payments processing, and partner with the team on required changes.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Relevant experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in global non-card payments (ACH, wire, RTP) on the consumer and/or wholesale side.
- Payments Strategy experience, including understanding of the payments processing technologies, latest market trends and innovative solutions, challenges and opportunities of different payment types.
- Ability to lead and implement an action plan with the objective to improve customer experience, streamline transaction processing and build future proof solutions.
- Program management: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage comprehensive programs in partnership with key stakeholders.
- Business casing and data analysis is a plus.
- Passion for results: Passion to drive execution and deliver results in a fast-moving and innovative environment.
- Analytical mindset: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to resolving issues and implementing process improvements.
- Highly collaborative: Ability to collaborate with and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to deliver value beyond traditional means.
- Effective communicator and influencer: Ability to influence key partners and executive stakeholders. Excellent communication skills, proficient in developing excellent quality presentations and deliverables for an executive audience.
Salary Range: $90,000.00 to $165,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
