Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an experienced Ph.D. level Weld Engineer, Material Scientist, Materials Engineer, or Metallurgist. to work in our Materials Properties Department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. Hybrid work opportunities may be available for this position. You will report to the Department Manager.

You will focus on research and development in joining and welding of both current and exotic materials. The role includes working with advanced manufacturing techniques such as welding-based 3D metal printing, casting, solidification, and thermomechanical processing. Candidates with experience in alloy development and a strong background in joining and welding technologies for applications in harsh environments will be ideal. You must integrate modeling and simulation into the development of processes and materials, and will lead teams as a principal investigator, securing funding and guiding unique laboratory research studies. 

Responsibilities Include:

Lead R&D efforts in welding and joining technologies including welding based advanced manufacturing technologies

Write proposals to obtain funding from appropriate private and public organizations to implement work

Support materials testing and characterization for multiple research programs.

Be a subject matter expert on thermo-mechanical processing of materials in area of specialty.

Review requirements, designs, codes, tests, and documentation.

Provide production parameters to keep consistent quality and performance on armor materials.

Lead in technical design and testing committees and provide insight and direction to ensure development projects are being solved for customer.

Provide technical solutions and position us for potential strategic business ventures.

Maintain product configuration management. Update product and materials specifications.

Procure items according to Product Configuration Management requirements.

Enhance inter-group interactions and teamwork to increase awareness of department capabilities and collaboration and identify important areas to enhance activities within the department to meet sponsor needs. Develop customer relationships.

Oversee the successful execution (cost, schedule, environmental compliance, quality assurance, and safety) of assigned projects.

Mentor and support peers and junior staff in technical growth.

Establish beneficial collaborative relationship with customers, technical representatives and field operations personnel looking for application-based advance materials development and deployment.

Be a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.

Be the Engineering Technical Authority's lead technical expert on welding and related research activities.

Maintain working relationships as the Engineering Subject Matter Expert on welding.

Establish credentialing of sub tier local welding technical experts.

Participate in code committee work associated with welding and represent the INL's position. Work with other outside organizations for the betterment of welding.

Work with individuals and programs to develop new welding processes.

Maintain personal training and keep certification(s) current.

Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

PhD in Materials Science or Materials Engineering  in welding engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited university, with 2 years experience.

The Ideal Candidate will have the following:

Experience in advanced manufacturing and 3D metal printing (on current methods including single and multi-wire weld arc additive manufacturing (WAAM and m-WAAM)/ gas melt arc (GMA) additive manufacturing), casting/solidification and thermomechanical processing to support alloy development will be considered. 

Proficiency in advanced manufacturing, computational methods and programming, computer aided design

(CAD) and thermo-mechanics.

Experience in PYTHON programming, thermo-structural analysis software (such as ABAQUS), computation fluid dynamics tools and CAD (STAR-CCM+, Solidworks, Inventor, and high-performance computing systems, image analysis and visualization.

Job Information: 

  • The pay range for this position is $91,008 - $186,588. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • You are required to show a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • You will be asked to obtain and maintain a Q clearance, which require US Citizenship.
