It is designed for quick turnover of patients to help keep the flow of the Operating Room and PACU running smoothly and efficiently. It has a nurses' station, medication room, storage room, dirty utility area and a nutrition room. The patient population consists of, but is not limited to, extended stay patients, surgical patients who require observation post-op when not meeting SDS discharge criteria, cath lab patients and any other patients requiring a short stay. These observation admissions are typically 3-6 hours in length. During times of high hospital census, post-surgical patients requiring an overnight admission will be admitted to 3 West until an inpatient room is available.</p><p>Registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require care. Registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients. Registered staff nurses provide patient and family education and advocate for their needs. We provide comprehensive medical care, such as infusion therapy and wound care, for children with complex medical needs. Other team members include nurse Liaisons, physical, occupational, speech and neonatal pediatric respiratory therapists, as well as experts in pharmacy, medical social work and durable medical equipment and supplies. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we actively coordinate the patient’s individualized plan of care.</p><p>We provide short-term medical care, education, encouragement, and support to help our patients and families attain the highest level of health and independence. The Children’s Mercy Home Care Team teaches the child’s parents or legal guardians how to independently provide the care ordered. Our goal is to prevent hospital readmissions and ensure the best possible outcomes.</p><p>Our Home Health Nurse Specialists provide comprehensive medical care and perform a wide range of skilled nursing services including acute and rehabilitative care, assessment of high-risk newborns, assessment and teaching of various systems, diabetes and asthma teaching, wound care, infusion therapies and central line care, wellness and/or disease-focused education, and other specialized treatments. We see patients from birth to 18 years of age for a broad range of conditions including pre- and post- transplant care, multi-congenital abnormalities, cancer care, wound care, failure to thrive and feeding difficulties, and preterm newborns to name a few. &nbsp;Our skilled nursing visits typically last around one hour and our nurses see several patients a day. Our Home Health Nurse Specialists see patients in the comfort of their own home, at school or daycare, or a relative’s house. &nbsp;</p><p>Our Home Health Nurse Specialists have a lot of autonomy and manage their own caseload. They enjoy the flexibility of seeing patients outside of the walls of the hospital or clinic, and in the comfort of their own home. Home Health Nurse Specialist care for patients with a wide variety of acuities and diagnoses, so no day is ever the same. They coordinate care and communicate with the patient’s entire care team. They assist patients and families to thrive and succeed at home. Acts as a team leader on maternal fetal transports and supports a teamwork philosophy.</p><p>When expecting moms have a medical emergency, there are two patients who need care—mom and baby. Our goal is to ensure the wellbeing of both mom and baby during a transfer. The award-winning Children's Mercy Transport team partners with experts from our Elizabeth J. Ferrell&nbsp;Fetal Health Center&nbsp;to help transport pregnant women safely to a higher level of care. More than 700 pregnant women have received this delicate transport service.</p><p>Our experienced team includes a high-risk obstetrical nurse as well as our neonatal critical care transport team, which has advanced critical care nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical technicians.&nbsp;The team is under the guidance of our Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, who work with the mom’s doctor to coordinate transport to the best place of care for both mom and her unborn baby, based on her condition and location.</p><p>The Maternal Fetal Transport service is available to all expecting mothers who are at least 20 weeks gestation and in need of immediate care.&nbsp;Dedicated transport teams are in-house 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready for immediate dispatch. Patients benefiting from this visit include children who have longstanding medical conditions, complex needs, require pre-operative laboratory/medical testing, or families and children with concerns about having a procedure performed under anesthesia. The plan developed at the PAT visit allows for individualized patient preparation utilizing a team approach. Our efforts are focused toward reducing patient and family stress in addition to reducing delays on the day of the procedure. The team works to ensure the proper pre-operative testing, medication instruction and other pre-surgical preparations have taken place.<br>&nbsp;<br>The Surgical Clearinghouse is a call center that provides a central location for peri-operative coordination of care. A team of clinical nurses contacts the patients and families 7-10 days prior to their scheduled surgery date to resolve any issues that could potentially be barriers on the day of surgery. Nurses also educate families on the pre-operative processes, expectations for the day of surgery, and pre-operative care. Collaboration with our social work department, surgery clinics, and surgeons allow for all issues to be resolved prior to arrival on the day of surgery.</p><p>Registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require care. Registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients. Registered staff nurses provide patient and family education and advocate for their needs. Our surgical care is designed to manage routine to highly complex illnesses. We also have experts in every pediatric specialty ready to go at all times to provide comprehensive care for kids. The Operating Room at Children's Mercy Hospital has an exclusive RN nursing staff allowing RN's versatile roles of circulating, scrubbing and RN First Assisting.</p><p>We have 18 operating rooms at our downtown Adele Hall campus and 4 operating rooms at the Children's Mercy Kansas campus. As a level-one trauma center, our procedures encompass a wide range of acuity in the following surgical sub-specialties: General surgery, Neuro surgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Oral surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic surgery, Urology, GYN, and Dermatology. Patients range in age from neonates to young adults with a 1:1 nurse to patient ratio.</p><p>The operating room department is complimented by instrument processing specialists, orderlies and administrative assistants. We also work side by side with attending physicians, fellows, residents, and our anesthesia team to provide extraordinary care for our pediatric surgical patients daily. Critical care registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require intensive care.</p><p>Critical care registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients in the intensive care areas of the hospital.
