Position Summary
The Academic Advisor-Athletics will provide academic assistance for student-athletes with an emphasis on graduation while sustaining academic eligibility and student success. The position serves as the secondary advisor for all student-athletes providing one-on-one help to student-athletes in the areas of career services, time management, and study skills. The Academic Advisor-Athletics reports to the Assistant Director of Athletic Academic Advising.

Essential Functions


Job Duties


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong presentation skills for individual and group audience;
  • Proficiency in handling multiple priorities, pivoting based on changing priorities, meeting deadlines, and problem solving;
  • Outstanding ability to work with professionalism and confidentiality in a deadline driven environment with shifting priorities;
  • Ability to consistently apply best practices in advising;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures; and
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
Bachelors Degree.

Required Work Experience
One (1) year of experience in advising, student development, or related academic function within higher education or professional position in a high school setting such as counselor, teacher, or administrator. Note that additional education or professional experience in a field directly related to the advisor's specific responsibilities may substitute for experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree;
  • Experience with NCAA compliance rules and regulations in post-secondary setting;
  • Experience with the certification-of-athletes process;
  • Experience with coordinating objective-based study halls;
  • Experience as a learning specialist;
  • Experience with student athletes and various degree planning and requirements;
  • Experience with sports in a college/university setting;
  • Experience with database management systems: Banner, DegreeWorks, etc.; or
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed, especially during peak periods, to meet departmental goals.

Physical Demands
Ability to move across campus to various buildings for meetings and events.
