Job Summary
As our Administrative Systems Engineer I, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and optimizing our IT infrastructure. You’ll manage servers, support database systems, assist with IT projects, and contribute to the technological advancement of KGS. This position offers a balance of hands-on technical work and opportunities for professional growth.
Key Responsibilities
Server Management and Support
- Monitor and maintain server stability and flexibility
- Implement server updates and upgrades under supervision
- Manage file, print, database, web, and internet mapping servers
- Implement security policies and manage backup/restore procedures
- Assist in setting up development and production environments for web applications
- Provide technical support to end-users
Database Systems Maintenance and Service Support
- Contribute to database reliability, availability, and serviceability
- Design, build, and implement databases
- Perform data import/export, merging, and validation tasks
- Collaborate on implementing new database components for improved data management
- Provide technical support for database resources and systems
IT Project and Service Support
- Assist in coordinating IT projects, including timeline and deliverable management
- Support project workflow management
- Provide backup support to other KGS IT staff
- Offer weekly IT support at the KGS Earth Analysis Research Library
Professional Development
- Engage in continuous learning to stay current with new technologies
- Participate in implementing emerging technologies (cloud services, server clustering, etc.)
- Actively participate in the UKIT community and KGS activities
Must-Have Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in server management and administration
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server environments
- Experience with database management and maintenance
- Familiarity with web application environments
- Solid understanding of IT security principles and best practices
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with Linux environments
- Familiarity with GIS and internet mapping technologies
- Knowledge of cloud services and server clustering
- Experience working in a research or academic environment
- Relevant IT certifications, such as:
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate)
- CompTIA certifications (e.g., A+, Network+, Security+)
- Database certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate)
- Project management certifications (e.g., ITIL, CompTIA Project+)
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Knowledgeable in MS Operating Systems, Linux, Server Management, Networking, Computer Security, Database Management, and Database software.
