POSITION: Assistant Principal, Pathways Academy of Technology and Design (Grades 9-12)

REPORTS TO: Principal of the School and/or the Superintendent of Schools’ designee

POSITION SUMMARY: Hartford Public Schools seeks a dynamic Assistant Principal, who has a passion for educating children, a commitment to closing achievement gaps, and an ability to maximize learning for all students. We welcome applications from innovative professionals dedicated to urban education who understand students' diverse academic, social, and emotional needs.

The Assistant Principal will: 

  • Design, organize, and model effective instruction, communication, discipline, and intervention strategies
  • Promote a positive school culture and climate
  • Assume all administrative and supervisory duties in the principal's absence

Ideal candidates will have a proven track record in providing strong instructional leadership focused on student-centered learning. Preferred candidates will also have demonstrated success in building strong relationships and engaging students, staff, and families to promote equity and excellence. Additionally, robust skills using Google Suite, PowerSchool, and Microsoft Office Suite are essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Formulating philosophy and school policy
  • Evaluating school program and staff
  • Communicating philosophy, policy, and program
  • Recommending changes in programming
  • Working directly with instructional staff in improving programs for students
  • Assessing the needs of students for the improvement of instruction
  • Defining assignments and duties of specialized staff
  • Notifying the principal of any vacancies and/or transfers
  • Recommending to principal the best possible candidates for teaching positions
  • Organizing staff for maximum effectiveness and high morale
  • Ensuring that the school is community oriented
  • Making budgetary recommendations
  • Providing timely reports as requested
  • Implementing contracts and communicating with bargaining unit members
  • Providing effective supervision of all personnel for whom there is supervisory responsibility
  • Interpreting department policies and programs to school personnel, parents, and communities
  • Maintaining liaison, as appropriate, with public and private agencies
  • Maintaining a leadership role in the implementation of applicable Federal/State regulations and guidelines
  • Assisting in the development of the Plan for School Excellence and Accountability (school improvement plan)
  • Being knowledgeable of potential sources of fiscal support for department programs and participating in the development of proposals for special funding
  • Adhering to established Board of Education policies and administrative regulations
  • Performing assigned duties that may be beyond the regular work day that are school related. These duties, excluding those that are paid duties, shall be distributed as fairly and as equitably as possible among administrators.
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned by the Principal and/or the Superintendent’s designee

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Instructional experience at the secondary level in urban/multi-cultural settings
  • Knowledge of and experience with the needs and opportunities of magnet schools
  • Strong and collaborative leadership with an honest, transparent, and inclusive style that supports high student outcomes and educational excellence
  • Outstanding and visible communication skills with the ability to foster strong relationships with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families) and community at large
  • Demonstrated experience in fostering a positive school culture and climate
  • Unwavering commitment to high academic achievement, social-emotional, and whole child development of all students
  • Ability to maintain poise, adaptability, and flexibility in a fast-paced educational environment
  • High level of personal accountability for student growth, academic results, and staff performance
  • Record of success leading and motivating adults (as a grade-level/dept. chair, coach, or administrator)
  • Knowledge of pedagogy for development of curriculum and assessment that supports student learning
  • Persistent use of data and researched-based focus on student achievement
  • Demonstrated equitable leadership practices that impacted instruction, culture, and climate
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all school stakeholders toward a common goal
  • Operate with proficiency assigned software programs including Google Suite, PowerSchool, and Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated understanding of, experience in, and commitment to the integration of technology into the curriculum and instruction to facilitate student learning 
  • Ability to inspire excellence in others

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Connecticut Certification in Intermediate Administration or Supervision (092)

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary is in accordance with the Hartford Principals’ and Supervisors’ Association’s 2024-2025 Schedule: Assistant Principal Groups 7, 8, and 9, $123,976 - $138,863 (213-day work year).
