Job Description:

1. GENERAL POSITION INFORMATION

Position Name: Assistant Professor – Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Online/Remote)

Classification: Exempt, benefitted

FTE: Full-time

Work Hours: Variable due to online nature of program. Generally, 9a-3p PST M-F, with remainder on evenings or weekends.

Department/Division: College of Graduate Studies

Supervisor: Director, Clinical Mental Health Counseling program

2.  POSITION SUMMARY

The assistant professor of the clinical mental health counseling program is responsible for teaching 12 courses per academic year, including clinical or academic courses. The administrative load includes advising and assisting the Director with curriculum development, assessment, accreditation, and committee participation. The candidate for this position must be eligible for inclusion as core, full faculty for MPCAC and CACREP accreditation. Candidates should be familiar with the MS in Counseling degree and the integrated CMHC/SPP EdD degree offered by the University since they will be teaching students enrolled in both disciplines.

3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching (80%)

1.         Teach 12 courses per academic year including those related to counseling theory; psychopathology; professional identity; multiculturism; ethics; counseling methods; research; tests and assessments; group counseling; career counseling; clinical practicum and internship; and specialty areas including sport and performance psychology.

2.         Prepare syllabi; update course materials; participate in course and program learning outcome assessments; continuously improve course materials; and develop curriculum.

3.         Deliver instruction in an online learning environment using available university learning management and HIPAA-compliant document storage systems.

4.         Provide detailed feedback on student assignments in a timely and constructive manner while working to maintain engaging and respectful interactions with students.

5.         Provide ethical clinical supervision to practicum and internship students and consulting mentorship to sport and performance psychology students including review of student recordings, case conceptualization reports, self-evaluations, site and site supervisor evaluations, hours logs, and all required documentation related to site development and maintenance.

6.         Demonstrate a commitment to building a learning community empowered through multicultural perspectives that lead to cultural competence and emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, staff, and faculty.

Advising and Student Relations (10%)

1.         Work with Student Success to facilitate precise records of student coursework, update planners, and to assist students in course registration

2.         Hold quarterly advising meetings and with advisees on an as-needed basis

3.         Aid students working with difficult courses or life challenges that may interrupt degree completion, including referral to student services, other departments, or development of remediation plans, with demonstrated thoughtfulness about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion that could impact student performance.

4.         Provide written documentation upon request.

5.         Effectively communicate institutional standards for graduation.

6.         Work effectively with Registrar to report concerns about student program enrollment or transcript information.

7.         Participate in Program admissions 10 hours per quarter.

8.         Work effectively with Program Director in student remediation.

Scholarship, Service and Professional Identity (10%)

1.         Maintain memberships with American Counseling Association, as well as state and regional professional associations.

2.         Maintain licensure and supervision credentials, including personal liability insurance.

3.         Consistently engage in professional writing and publication efforts, including with students when possible.

4.         Participate in research with program peers and other university staff when possible.

5.         Engage with students as dissertation chair or committee member when available and when subject matter is consistent with publication interests.

6.         Assist students to present or publish at state, regional, or national association conferences or in periodicals or peer-reviewed journals.

7.         Participate in university service through committee work, collaborations, and ad hoc projects/initiatives.

5. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Education & Training: Doctoral degree with graduate education and training in counseling from an accredited institution, preferably from an MPCAC or CACREP accredited program or doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Educational Administration) AND to have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for at least a full academic year BEFORE July 1, 2013.

Certifications & Licenses: Current Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor or licensure (3 years preferred); Current national supervisor credential or nationally approved supervisor credential eligible to be completed within one year of hire; Current membership and participation in appropriate state, regional, and national professional organizations.

Experience: Prior experience as a CMHC clinical supervisor for counselors-in-training or professional counselors; Evidence of at least two years of full-time equivalent teaching in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Experience as a mental health counselor; Evidence of scholarship or a scholarly research agenda; Experience with applicant interviews, academic planning, and student advising; Experience with curriculum development and assessment; Experience in managing student concerns in an online learning format.

Related Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Self-sufficiency in the management of personal schedule; Proficient in document/report preparation adhering to institutional editorial guidelines; Intermediate-to-advanced computer skills required (MS Office Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat Professional); Proficiency with video conferencing systems; Working understanding and experience with Canvas (or equivalent) learning management system.

Other Qualifications: Professional interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communication; Effective management of faculty and students in professional degree programs; Demonstrated commitment to collegiality and shared governance; Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize/execute plans and resource management to achieve desired teaching outcomes; Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Ability to exercise professional judgment and assume responsibility in clinical decision making; Ability to adapt quickly to a changing environment and learn new systems and processes; Evidence of thorough and accurate documentation systems; Willingness and ability to follow direction from director, dean, administrators as consistent with university policy; Working knowledge of FERPA student privacy regulations; Commitment to this position as primary full-time employment.

Preferred

Education & Training: Graduate education in sport and performance psychology is preferred.

Certifications & Licenses: Experience with higher education accreditation standards and compliance analysis; Experience with self-study reports, accreditation evaluation team membership, and/or accreditation committee membership.

Experience: Prior experience teaching applied sport and performance psychology subject matter; Prior experience in mentoring individuals toward CMPC certification.
