Position Description
The Associate Director of Pedagogy reports to the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics (ELSCE) Executive Director and partners closely with Faculty Director, the Director of Pedagogy and Civil Disagreement, the Chief Assessment Scientist as well as other senior staff members at ELSCE to ensure vision alignment, strategy, and faculty engagement and training around pedagogical innovations in civil discourse and civil disagreement. The Associate Director will also partner closely with FAS peers in the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Bok Center, and the Program in General Education. This position will offer important guidance to fellows connected to the Civil Discourse Initiative, who are working on ethics and civics education-related research and programming housed at the Center.
Vision and Strategy Alignment
- Works effectively and collaboratively with pedagogy experts at ELSCE and FAS, and with stakeholders elsewhere in the University to align vision and strategy across university efforts.
- Secures buy-in and agreement across disparate programs to accomplish program goals.
- Ensures alignment across ELSCE classroom-based innovation and co-curricular program design.
- Identifies, evaluates, and curates relevant contributors and resources from inside and outside Harvard, using expert judgment on quality.
Supports FAS and University Faculty and TFs in Course Design and Delivery
- Supports university faculty and TFs on how to design and implement teaching strategies, lessons, and assignments built around ethics and civil discourse engagement. Assists with course and section implementation.
- Serves as an advisor to Bok staff, Gen Ed staff, and faculty around civil discourse best practices.
- Hosts and facilitates faculty engagement and collaboration through lunches and other events.
Designs and Implements Resources & Trainings
- In collaboration with other ethics pedagogy experts, designs and implements training and workshop opportunities on values-based dilemmas and civil discourse for campus community. Trainings target faculty, TFs, pedagogy fellows and student leaders.
- Responsible for offering advanced training based upon a train-the-trainer model to increase scale and impact of civil discourse pedagogy efforts.
Ethics Pedagogy Community Oversight, Convening, and Facilitation
- Convenes the ELSCE Pedagogy Studio (40+ members from across campus), works with Faculty Director to build agendas and lead lab sessions.
- Leads the Ethics Pedagogy Fellows seminar sessions to train graduate students in advance methodologies of ethics teaching and learning practices, including game-based design, simulation design and delivery, case-study facilitation, etc.
- Leads team of Research Assistants in the research and development phase of resource design and creation.
Special Projects
- Spearheads special projects in pedagogy as requested by the ELSCE Faculty Director, Executive Director and/or Director of Pedagogy and Civil Disagreement.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- PhD in humanities or social sciences required.
- Knowledge of best practices in fostering ethics and civil discourse through teaching and proven ability to design effective pedagogical strategies.
- Demonstrated success in an academic environment, including direct interaction with faculty, staff and students.
- Proven success with coordinating a multi-stakeholder initiative.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to build positive relationships to work professionally with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
- Strong diplomatic skills and tact, and an ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
- Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, and experience with public speaking.
- Self-motivating, able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Outlook Suite.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
- Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

This is a three-year term position with possibility of renewal based upon funding sources and business needs.

Work Format Details
This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
