Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Associate Provost is an expert, strategist and change agent who provides overall strategic leadership to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a demonstrated expression of Saint Joseph University’s mission and its related strategic plan. As a senior administrative officer, the individual is responsible for leading and coordinating the university’s inclusive excellence efforts to create a diverse and welcoming environment for all. In addition, building upon significant progress and work accomplished, the Associate Provost will develop and execute a university Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. Given the importance and broad scope of this work, the selected leader will maintain a visible presence on campus, actively partnering with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and administrators across the university.

The Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion reports to the Provost and is an essential member of the University Leadership Council and the Provost’s Council. In addition, this position directly manages the Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and actively collaborates with other key university leadership within Enrollment Management, Human Resources, Student Life, SJU Libraries, Advancement, the Title IX/Bias Response Office, and the Office for Teaching and Learning.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

● Build upon the completed climate studies, the Inclusive Excellence Blueprints, the Equity Audit Report, and other DEI plans to develop a Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. The plan should be prepared in collaboration with university stakeholders and include goal-setting, outcome metrics, reporting, and assessment.

● Serve as the university’s DEI data steward and assess the university’s progress on its measurable goals, preparing university reports, and creating effective communication channels.

● Serve as a content expert and the university’s chief spokesperson on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● Represent ODEI at events for internal and external programming, audiences and partners.

● Oversee the Centers for Inclusion & Diversity and the activities of its departments.

● Manage the Faculty Liaisons toward achievement of academic and faculty development initiatives.

● Supervise and evaluate the Office’s full-time directors.

● Manage the Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion’s budget including co-sponsorship opportunities with campus partners, and oversee all other DEI-related budgetary accounts.

● Lead, facilitate, and/or collaborate on university-wide education and training, providing professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, administration, and students on areas related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● Serve as sponsor for the Day of Dialogue to include financial support and receipt of updates from the event co-chairs.

● Supervise Women’s Center activities, programs, and budget.

● Assist with early arrival and professional development programs sponsored by the Office (e.g., Running Start and Ready to Launch).

● Collaborate and partner with key university leadership, including but not limited to the following areas:

Enrollment Management and Admissions to enhance recruitment of historically marginalized and systemically underserved students.

Human Resources to improve employee recruitment, inclusion, engagement, and retention, and to explore ways to incorporate DEI performance indicators and assessment into university performance management.

Student Life division to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion for the entire student population while also  improving sense of belonging, engagement, retention, and persistence to graduation among historically marginalized and systemically underserved students.

Office for Teaching and Learning and the Faculty Liaisons to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into curriculum, teaching, and research.

Deans of the respective schools and colleges to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Advancement/Development to engage in donor relations, grant-writing and other fundraising activities to support ODEI’s funds (e.g., Strategic Initiatives, Women’s Center, Running Start, etc.) as well as other DEI initiatives across the university.

Title IX/Bias Response Office in leadership of the Bias Activity Response Group (BARG)

● With Human Resources, co-lead emerging Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), and contribute to the strategic direction of ERGs in alignment with diversity, equity & inclusion strategies.

● Partner with campus stakeholders (e.g., Athletics, the Success Center, Student Disability Services, Student Senate, Faculty Senate, Staff & Administrative Support (SAS) Team, Academic Programs, the Kinney Center for Autism Education & Support, and Veterans Services) to facilitate the effective, ongoing integration of underrepresented and under-resourced populations into the University community.

● Oversee campus-wide awareness events and consider new events for DEI as appropriate.

● Develop and maintain active partnerships with the external community and appropriate alumni groups.

● Ensure that a member of ODEI  chairs or actively engages in other standing and ad hoc committees that address diversity, inclusion, equity, and/or belonging (e.g., Provost Advisory Council for Inclusion & Diversity, HawkHUB, the Alliance, Trans*Inclusion Working Group, FirstGen Working Group).

Minimum Qualifications

Required

● Master’s degree in relevant discipline.

● Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience in the development, implementation, and assessment of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging strategies and practices.

● Evidence of nuanced, broad, contemporary, and sophisticated understanding of identity and intersectionality.

● Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to build rapport and collaborate with diverse constituents both internally and externally.

● Demonstrated leadership in the creation and/or delivery of organizational diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, cultural competency, and bias training programs.

● Demonstrated excellence in budget preparation, decision-making, supervision, long-range planning, organization, and conflict management.

● Demonstrated ability to establish effective partnerships with campus community members including student, faculty, and staff organizations, academic units and departments, as well as community and alumni constituents.

● General understanding of laws relating to equal opportunity, affirmative action, and claims of discrimination and harassment (e.g., Title IX).

● Demonstrated ability to prepare, analyze, and interpret reports.

Preferred

● Terminal Degree and record of research in a relevant field.

● Experience working in a higher education setting with multiple constituencies (i.e., students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni).

Physical Requirements &/or Unusual Work Hours

● Ability and willingness to work weekend and evening hours.

● Ability to move about campus.
