Job Summary

The Capital Construction Healthcare Managing Principal:
  • Manages large and highly complex healthcare construction projects with budgets well above the capital threshold
  • Takes all necessary and appropriate action(s) to protect and achieve the project’s predetermined scope and objectives
  • Analyzes user requirements, prioritizes, and develops project plans, and manages multiple projects simultaneously
  • Reviews and analyzes estimates during the design process and determines and verifies if project objectives can be attained within the approved budget
  • Coordinates scopes, communication plans, contracts, budgets, and schedules with both stakeholder and consultant groups
  • Initiates actions necessary to maintain the scope of the approved project, the department’s goals, the enterprise’s mission, and the successful completion of the project
  • Presides over risk management on capital healthcare projects concerning design, public patient/staff safety, and contractual obligations
  • Leads and manage large and complex project teams to successful outcomes in line with project goals, stakeholder satisfaction, and institution-wide initiatives


In addition, this position:
  • ensures delivery of cost-effective large and highly complex healthcare construction projects
  • Manages the evaluation of construction design proposals and recommends the firms most likely to provide the university with the “best value” during construction
  • Manages consultants and internal resources in support and oversight roles during construction phases for multidiscipline/multiphase projects
  • Participates and facilities routine and final project inspections
  • Coordinates the activation of new spaces, including equipment and furniture installation, cleaning services, etc.
  • Ensures the ongoing delivery and maintenance of timely and effective communications with all stakeholders
  • Continuously models and promotes excellent and professional customer service for internal and external customers

  • Facilitates commissioning and project close out requirements.


The Capital Construction Healthcare Managing Principal:
  • performs and conducts special studies, projects, and assignments as directed by the Associate Vice President for Planning, Design, and Construction
  • Represents the Capital Construction Director and AVP for Planning, Design, and Construction at various planning and construction conferences and special events/programs sponsored by the University of Kentucky
  • Assists facilities management leadership in developing new policies, procedures, contractual documents, and process improvement initiatives



Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

MS Windows/Office; SAP; CPM

Minimum ten years experience working on multiple healthcare project sites; preferably large complex project experience. Demonstrated experience in business and capital construction administration with proven financial acumen, compliance with safety and environmental statutes, and building codes.

Demonstrated knowledge of construction means and methods; the application of construction and contract law; budgeting and costing techniques; critical path scheduling; (CPM) and web-based project management.

Experience in higher education and/or large, highly complex healthcare project management. — Highly desirable.

Preferred Education/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a directly related field of study — Construction Project Management; Architecture; Engineering – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical plus 11 years experience.

Master’s Degree — Preferred.

Registered Architect or Licensed Engineer — Preferred.

CHC and/or KSHE Certification — Preferred.
