Lone Star College-Transportation & Global Logistics Center

Lone Star College offers high-quality, low-cost academic transfer and career training education to 80,000+ students each semester. LSC has been named a 2023 Great Colleges to Work For® institution by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

LSC consists of eight colleges, seven centers, eight Workforce Centers of Excellence and Lone Star Corporate College.

The Lone Star College-Transportation & Global Logistics Technology Center is a brand-new, 16,000 square foot state-of-the-art training facility where students learn the skills necessary to become a professional truck driver.

The LSC Professional Truck Driver Fast Track Certification program includes instruction on pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, backing and city street/highway driving. This course satisfies the requirements set by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

LSC is also an approved Commercial Driver License Third Party Testing facility. Texas DPS Testing Centers have a three to four week waiting list to for a student to take the test. Once a student successfully completes their LSC CDL training, they can immediately get scheduled to complete the Skills Test.

Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Under limited supervision, the Continuing Education Instructor, Truck Driving performs instructional duties related to the Transportation & Logistics Technical Center program and provides highly technical support and expertise. Requires extensive knowledge of technical area of expertise. Provides advice and acts as consultant as well as completes repairs, installations and building of equipment and systems. Generally unique position with limited backup.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides instruction for the professional truck driving classes, ensuring that the students meet the standards as established by all appropriate regulatory, credentialing and licensing agencies, including but not limited to the United States and Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Coordinating Board of Higher Education and the Lone Star College System
  • Maintains/repairs or facilitates the repair of equipment and vehicles as necessary; recommends supplies and equipment for budgetary consideration
  • Assists in identifying additional instructors and special presenters and verifying their qualifications as required by the state and regulatory/licensure agencies; evaluate instructors as requested by the supervisor
  • Develops and implements curriculum/course outlines to meet requirements of state and regulatory agencies; facilitates textbook and instructional materials selection
  • Maintains appropriate records for courses, classes, students, instructors and equipment in accordance with state and regulatory/licensure agencies
  • Assists in planning the schedule for the Center and other programs as assigned
  • Coordinates facilities and special equipment for instructional needs
  • Recommends emerging instructional needs for new courses and programs
  • Assists in Advisory Committee activities and attends all meetings; participates in divisional activities and meetings as required
  • Maintains and builds good relationships between the Center and the transportation industry/employers/contracted clients in order to assist students with job placement; assists in service to the business/industry community with program areas assigned
  • Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; must have demonstrated problem-solving ability
  • Must demonstrate instructional skills
  • Skilled in the Windows environment with basic proficiency with common office software
  • Ability to communicate, understand, and meet needs of less technical customers
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability to manage complex projects demonstrating a high degree of judgment, tact and discretion

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:  

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards as well as in indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to weather and safety hazard typical of those within the commercial truck-driving industry
  • Requires working some Saturdays, Sundays and College holidays
  • Workload consists of responsibilities identified in the LSC Chancellor’s procedures and with a threshold of 1,200 instructional training hours per academic year

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma and at least 3 years of truck driving experience
  • Class “A” CDL (without an automatic restriction)
  • Motor vehicle report within Lone Star College insurance guidelines
  • Current medical examiner’s certificate
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and continued participation in federal drug and alcohol testing program
  • Safety record in good standing with previous employers

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree and 5 years of commercial over-the-road truck driving experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience training new drivers with an over-the-road carrier
Salary

Commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.
