Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Core Faculty member is responsible for the c coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities for both the BA and MA Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs at the Pasadena Campus and for Online students. This faculty member is expected to fulfill teaching responsibilities during day, evening, or weekend sessions as needed, across any Pacific Oaks College campus.

In addition to teaching, the faculty member will engage in student advising, participate in various college committees, and actively contribute to local, state, regional, and national professional organizations and activities.

This position is primarily based in Pasadena and reports directly to the Dean of the School of Human Development and Education in Pasadena.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General Supervision: The incumbent normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Minimal or no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Teaching and Instruction:

  • Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or on weekends on any Pacific Oaks College campus as assigned;
  • Ensure that each course is taught according to an approved syllabus and meets the curricular and pedagogical standards of the program. Incorporate instructional technologies and adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles. 
  • Maintain clear communications with students regarding course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and grading timelines
  • File a course syllabus for each course taught with the Dean and Program Manager;

Curriculum Development & Review:

  • Participate actively in the review and development of programs, curriculum, and student learning outcomes.
  • Recommend improvements to the curriculum that align with the college’s mission and goals.
  • Stay updated on current trends and innovations in instructional methods and content through ongoing professional development.

Student Advising and Support:

  • Serve as an academic advisor to assigned students, providing guidance and referrals to appropriate college resources as needed.
  • Offer one-on-one consultations during office hours to support student success.
  • Contribute to student recruitment and retention efforts.

College Service and Engagement:

  • Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development sessions, and orientation activities.
  • Serve on college committees and contribute to the development and implementation of college initiatives.
  • Engage in co-curricular activities that enhance the student experience and support the college community.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adherence to all college policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • KNOWLEDGE:
  • In-depth knowledge of current pedagogy, research, and best practices in Early Childhood Education programs.
  • Strong understanding of current trends and challenges in Early Childhood Education.
  • Proficiency in teaching in hybrid and online formats.
  • SKILLS:
  • Skill in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), student learning platforms (Canvas, Moodle), and student management systems (Campus Vue).
  • Flexibility and initiative, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout the Community Solution and its affiliate campuses, alumni, other constituents and the public.
  • ABILITIES:
  • Ability to teach on-ground, Hybrid & Online courses and travel to offsite cohorts located within a 25-mile radius from the Pasadena campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating participants.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Ability to learn new innovative student technology systems.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. from a regionally accredited university.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of teaching early childhood education courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Scholarship: A strong interest and competence in research and scholarship.
  • Service: Record of service to previous institution(s), the profession, and the community.
  • Excellent practitioner and teacher of early childhood education with or without a specialization in special education.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderately noisy while in the office.  The office temperature is about 70 degrees.

DECISION MAKING:

The position is governed by the policies of Pacific Oaks, along with established procedures for the department. Independent judgment is required in the supervision of personnel as well as in the carrying out of the department's strategic goals and budget management.

CONTACT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Routine exchange or presentation of information.

Responsible for demonstrating professionalism and leadership in resolving conflicts with students and employees.  Recommends alternative approaches to solve problems and conflicts. 

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

This position does not require the management of budgets, but it is required to follow Pacific Oaks policies for purchasing and budget approvals.

This opportunity is budgeted at $66,560.00-73,170.00 base compensation. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
