Job Description
The Director of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of Harvard Divinity School’s financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and accounting. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position ensures the effective stewardship of resources, alignment with University policies, and the advancement of the School’s academic and operational goals.
This is a fully benefits-eligible term position through June 30, 2027, with the potential for extension or transition to a continuing role.
Financial Administration and Operations:
- Oversee financial operations and administration, including financial reporting, compliance, and application of University policies.
- Ensure internal control activities are followed according to University policy in accounting, budgeting and financial reporting areas.
- Partner with departments to ensure accurate, efficient, and transparent financial processes.
- Lead quarterly reviews with the Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) office and provide analytical insights on variances and trends.
- Identify potential operational challenges and propose solutions. Manage the development and implementation of operational policies, procedures and training for financial staff.
- Serves in a consulting and review capacity for sponsored research activities, providing guidance to departments on budget preparation and post-award management.
Financial Planning and Analysis:
- Lead annual and multi-year financial planning, forecasting, and analysis in close partnership with the CFO and senior leadership.
- Develop specialized reporting and analyses for use in financial planning.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations that inform strategic decisions and resource allocations across the School.
- Analyze metrics and identify opportunities to streamline processes; develop and implement plans for improved procedures.
- Evaluate departmental financial policies and procedures, recommend improvements.
Management:
- Supervises and manages a team of finance professionals, ensuring effective hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management. Leads and mentors staff to foster and promote an inclusive, collaborative, and innovative work environment.
Working Conditions:
This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience.
- Supervisory experience.
- Candidates wishing to be considered must supply a cover letter in addition to a resume.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- MBA or Master’s degree in relevant field preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of budget management, financial analysis and financial modeling; working knowledge of accounting principles.
- Understanding of systems, governance, and decision-making in a university environment.
- Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tools.
- A minimum of three years of experience with finance, controls and budgeting, including the ability to read, understand, and act on complex financial reports.
- An ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment.
