Job Summary
The Director of Research Integrity is a member of a cross-functional team supporting a wide range of research programs and activities for the Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty and its governance. In partnership with HBS faculty and the Associate Managing Director (AMD) who acts as the School’s Research Integrity Officer (RIO), the Director of Research Integrity will help assess and lead the development and implementation of a research integrity program for the HBS research community. He/she be responsible for the delivery of the HBS’s Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training program. The Director will manage matters of potential misconduct, including management of all phases of the review process pursuant to applicable policies and procedures, working with the RIO and other appropriate administrative offices to facilitate and support inquiries and investigations.
Position Description
Reporting to the MD who serves as the HBS RIO and working closely with members of the Research Compliance team, HBS faculty, and administrative partners at HBS, the Director will:
- Provide substantive leadership on all matters related to research misconduct and responsible conduct of research
- Work with the RIO and HBS faculty to develop and implement a training program to meet the increased need for education in the areas of research compliance, data security, research integrity, research collaborations, and human subject's research
- Manage allegations of misconduct in accordance with applicable policies and procedures, including HBS’s Policy and Procedures for Responding to Allegations of Research Misconduct
- Lead the review process for each case, including coordination with the HBS Dean’s Office on responsibilities handled by appointed committees
- Support research integrity assessments, inquiries and investigations
- Support inquiry and investigation committee activities, including guidance on policies and procedures, facilitation of interviews and related communications, and planning to meet case deadlines
- Communicates and works with Harvard University offices and external agencies and organizations where appropriate, including federal agencies where federal regulations apply and other research institutions where such coordination is necessary
- Work closely with the Director of Research Compliance to provide support for non-compliance matters, quality assurance and improvement initiatives and responsibilities associated with research security.
- Works with RIO, the HBS Dean’s Office and Harvard’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) to review and update relevant policies to ensure cohesiveness and consistency as well as ensure compliance policies are being enforced
- This role is responsible for other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Master’s degree, Juris Doctor (JD), or Ph.D. in the social sciences.
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a role primary focused on different aspects of research integrity (experience should include evidence of strong project management skills.)
- Experience handling allegations of research misconduct, including conducting investigations.
- Experience with the development and delivery of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training, preferably focused on social science research.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Strong writing skills.
- Experience in a service organization, preferably in a higher education or research environment preferred.
- An interest in business research and experience working with faculty in an academic or research environment preferred.
- Excellent judgment and sound decision-making skills.
- An understanding of and ability to manage confidential information.
- The ability to communicate with a diverse group of people with sensitivity.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently with an entrepreneurial spirit, flexibility, and high capacity to assess priorities and to meet competing deadlines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong attention to detail.
- Takes initiative and ownership of work, following through to completion and executing with an appropriate sense of urgency.
Additional Information
This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
