The Education Outreach & Research Services Fellow (EORSF) and Resident Librarian is an early-career or sector-changing librarian based at the Monroe C. Gutman Library and serves the diverse community of learners and teachers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE).
The EORSF is sponsored by the Harvard Library (HL) Diversity Residency Program, the Harvard Administrative Fellowship Program (Visiting track), and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Diversity Alliance. The Fellow is provided a full-time, two-year appointment to cultivate professional goals and interests in an academic environment complemented by career development experiences.
Reporting to Gutman Library’s Critical Pedagogy Research Librarian, the EORSF helps build inclusive and equitable HGSE learning environments to support student success through various forms of outreach, instruction, and programming. The EORSF serves as a member of Gutman Library’s Research Services Team and Communications Team.

Position Description
Outreach Duties
- Work with the Communications & Administration Coordinator and the Open Education Research Librarian (Gutman Library’s outreach leads) on strategic HGSE outreach and marketing initiatives.
- Plan and implement creative marketing, exhibits, and events as a collaborative member of the Gutman Library Communications Team.
- Promote Gutman Library services within in-person and online HGSE orientations, classes, workshops, fairs, and learning communities.
Research Services Duties
- Promote and participate in the Gutman Library Research Services Team’s Inclusive Reference model, including principles of cultural humility, Universal Design for Learning, trauma-informed teaching, etc.
- Leverage critical theories and pedagogies for the teaching of critical information literacy and the interpretation of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the Reference and User Services Association Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers.
- Provide library instruction via research consultations, reference queries, and curriculum-integrated classes.
- Consult with and instruct library users to devise research strategies.
- Develop instructional materials, including LibGuides, online learning objects, and other forms of curricular content.
- Collaborate with Research Services colleagues and stakeholders to improve library services through data-driven and research-based assessment methodologies.
Other Duties
- Represent Gutman Library on HGSE and Harvard Library committees.
- Serve as a full member of the Gutman Library Council (GLC).
- Work closely with Gutman Library colleagues to lead or propose special projects.
- Collaborate with the Associate University Librarian and Chief Diversity Officer for HL, the HL EDIBA Council, and other HL Fellows to incorporate HL values within multi-year goals and objectives.
- Attend professional development events with support from HL and HGSE.
The EORSF should possess a willingness to build:
- Awareness and broad understanding of current issues in education-focused reference, instruction, and scholarly communication roles.
- The ability to effectively communicate with HGSE faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other members of the University community through interpersonal, written, and oral skills, including presentation and teaching abilities.
- A professional service trajectory related to the position’s duties and responsibilities.
- Relevant work experience that can be used to create a career portfolio.
- Mentorship-mentee relationships to support duties and responsibilities, career development, and areas of scholarly interest.
- Knowledge, experience, and skills to advance the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to engage effectively with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups.
- Analytical skills for decision making, organizing work, and setting priorities.
- Careful attention to detail and rigor in documentation.
- Proficiency in citation management tools (e.g. Zotero, EndNote, etc.).
Basic Qualifications
- Master’s degree in library or information science, or an equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program, upon start date.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
- Experience working in or subject-knowledge of education or the social/behavioral sciences.
- Related course work or experience with teaching, reference, outreach, or marketing.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the library to access books, office machinery, files, etc.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid position. The position is based onsite in Cambridge, MA. There may be opportunities for one to two days’ weekly remote work.
- Work location is responsive and subject to change based on business needs. Requests for flexibility will be considered consistent with Harvard University flexwork policies.
- Interacting with collections and spaces that may contain dust, mold, or other contaminants.
- The work associated with this position is performed in library, office, classroom, and events-space settings with intra-campus ambulatory travel between libraries and other university buildings.

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. The amount will vary based on the position and the candidate’s relevant experience.
Work Format Details
This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).
