POSITION: Executive Director of School Leadership

REPORTS TO: Chief of Schools/Deputy Superintendent/Superintendent of Schools

POSITION SUMMARY: The executive director of school leadership is responsible for leading, supervising, and coaching our school principals to ensure effective instructional leadership and improved student achievement across the district. The Executive Director of School Leadership will be a champion for the Principal Supervisor Standards, using them as a framework to develop and support principals in their growth through collaboration with district divisions in the oversight of school improvement, operations, student engagement, safety and implementation of district policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the development and implementation of the district’s instructional vision and goals.
  • Recruit, hire, evaluate, and support school principals in accordance with the Principal Supervisor Standards.
  • Collaborate with district staff to design and deliver professional development for principals focused on instructional leadership and best practices for reaching school improvement planning outcomes.
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among principals.
  • Conduct regular school walkthroughs and observations to assess instructional effectiveness.
  • Analyze data and use it to support the principal's instructional decisions and interventions.
  • Build strong relationships with teachers, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policies and resources that support effective school leadership.
  • Coach and evaluate principals on all aspects of the Connecticut School Leadership Standards.
  • Guide and hold school leaders accountable to effective resource utilization, including instructional resources and budgetary spending. 
  • Support principals in creating, implementing, evaluating and adjusting data-informed plans for improving engagement, culture and climate and instruction.
  • Facilitate school meetings connected to school based improvement plans and the District Model for Excellence to review student performance data, school climate survey, attendance data, financial matters, staffing needs and interventions.
  • Develop and contribute to communication and collaboration systems that ensure smooth flow of information to enable all resources to be focused on high-priority Tier 1 goals for each school and ensure the sharing and implementation of best practices and district initiatives across schools
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to determine needs for increased student academic achievement to support schools in reaching desired academic outcomes.
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state and local legislation, policies, and procedures

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a school leadership role, preferably as a principal or central office administrator.
  • Proven track record of improving student achievement and closing achievement gaps.
  • Deep understanding of the Principal Supervisor Standards and the ability to use them to guide principal development.
  • Strong instructional leadership skills and knowledge of curriculum development.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Reform minded, innovative thinker and leader who maintains a relentless focus on student learning and well-being
  • Strong and collaborative leadership with an honest, transparent and inclusive style that supports outcomes and educational excellence
  • Proven ability to provide detailed, instructionally focused feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex change initiatives, including by prioritizing and advocating multiple work streams, identifying and navigating interdependencies, and cultivating coherence
  • Deep understanding of curricular frameworks, quality classroom materials and high-quality instructional practices in Prek-12. 

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month work year. Pay is in accordance with experience level and the salary schedule for the Hartford Principals’ and Supervisors’ Association (HPSA). The bargaining agreement salary range is $148,258 to $160,853.
