About Illinois Business Consulting and the Illinois Consulting Academy:
Founded in 1995, Illinois Business Consulting (IBC) is the largest professionally managed, student-run university
consulting organization in the U.S. Gies is a leader in experiential learning due in large part to the foundation IBC
built in providing real-world learning experiences that transform student lives. IBC comprises approximately 250
undergraduate and graduate student consultants and leaders representing more than 40 academic disciplines
from across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. IBC completes approximately 50 fee-based consulting
projects per year with Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized corporations, startups and nonprofits.

Illinois Consulting Academy (ICA) is a student-run organization that provides training, career exploration and
networking for approximately 150 students interested in consulting careers. ICA is funded by sponsoring
consulting firms and includes both curricular and co-curricular programming.

Job Summary

This position oversees all aspects and operations of the largest professionally managed, student-run university consulting organization in the U.S., including finances, personnel, students, and clients. This role is responsible for sourcing fee-based consulting projects, mentoring student teams to successful completion of projects and overseeing the IBC staff. It includes oversight for Illinois Consulting Academy (ICA) and coordination with faculty and student leaders.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Project Oversight & Mentoring:
    · Provide strategic oversight and coaching for IBC’s Student Leadership Team (SLT), including quality control, continuous improvement efforts, professional development, coaching, training and one-on-one mentoring
    · Ensure optimal training and development for IBC Senior Managers, Project Managers and Consultants
    · Mentor IBC student consulting teams each semester, providing consulting expertise and guidance on team and client management
    · Collaborate with and guide Executive Mentors (IBC staff) as they mentor IBC student consulting teams
    · Provide oversight and training for ICA student leaders
  • Business Development:
    · Cultivate, retain and engage existing IBC client relationships
    · Source new IBC clients and projects by leveraging your existing network, through alumni outreach and indirectly through partnerships and other channels
    · Collaborate with other teams in the Magelli Office of Experiential Learning to ensure a coordinated project-sourcing effort across all experiential learning programs
    · Secure corporate sponsorships for the Illinois Consulting Academy (ICA)
  • IBC Staff Oversight & College Collaborations:
    · Lead and support the IBC professional staff team. This includes providing individual and team coaching, professional and career development, strategic planning, overseeing operations and financial management
    · Collaborate with ICA/BADM 395 faculty and staff
    · Foster strategic partnerships with leaders across the Gies College of Business and throughout the University of Illinois campus
    · Cultivate, retain and engage IBC Advisory Board relationships · Support, coordinate and build synergies with other teams in the Magelli Office

Working Conditions

  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required, to attend program events and student meetings : Occasionally

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • A total of five (5) years (60 months) of work experience in the consulting industry and/or in a corporate environment.
    • Demonstrated experience in project management, strategy development, and/or business development
    • Experience mentoring, training, and/or managing employees, consultants, and/or students

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous experience with strategic operations and community building.
    • Experience with budgeting and cost controls.
    • MBA or other relevant master’s degree.
    • Eight or more years of hands-on business consulting experience strongly preferred.
    • Experience in mentoring and coaching of students, junior consultants or employees highly
      preferred.
    • An understanding of and familiarity using technologies such as generative AI is preferred

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to work independently to lead a team of staff and students to execute on strategic operations.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills and professional writing, commitment to excellence, and effective communication to both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to collect and analyze data
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/19/2025. The budgeted salary range for the position is $100,000- $115,000 annually. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
