Primary Responsibilities
  • Safely and effectively manage a 6:1:1 specialized classroom
  • Write specific lesson plans that adhere to the Common Core; are chronologically and developmentally appropriate; reflect differentiated instruction techniques; incorporate technology, and are creative
  • Effectively incorporate support staff into the classroom program
  • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in accordance with current New York State Education and agency practices, procedures, and policies
  • Formulate long-term goals and short-term objectives and implement all goals on each student’s IEP
  • Assure that IEP mandates are fulfilled and document progress toward goals on the IEP
  • Make appropriate academic recommendations as a result of testing, professional judgment, and student needs
  • Engage students in activities that are interesting, meaningful, and individualized to reflect each student’s developmental level
  • Help each student to mature academically, socially, and emotionally
  • Effectively collaborate with stakeholders involved in child’s education, i.e. Parents, Related Services, Counselors, Aides, and Administrators
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • New York State Certification in appropriate special area
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, patience, and active listening
  • Ability to effectively work with individuals from a diverse array of cultural backgrounds, beliefs, customs, and lifestyles
  • Ability to physically restrain if required
