OVERVIEW:

The Multnomah County Department of Community Services, Transportation Division is looking for a full-time Transportation Construction Inspector (Engineering Technician 3)!

As a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Multnomah County Transportation Division, you will primarily be responsible for monitoring and verifying that construction projects on County transportation projects comply with project specifications, plans, and quality standards by inspecting ongoing work at construction sites, ensuring proper materials are used, properly documenting work by contractors/consultants and reporting any deviations or issues to the project manager. You will communicate with consultants, contractors or the public and act as a coach or resource for other engineering technicians in the areas of survey, engineering inspection, road/bridge construction, or related functions.

You will work on teams that solve critical, difficult construction challenges, and ensure that the Contractor the County hires executes the agreed on plans. At times you will lead the other project inspectors and assign work and schedule them to ensure adequate inspection coverage. Many of these projects are funded with federal dollars, which require extensive attention to detail and documentation. You will work in a highly flexible, team-oriented environment and will need to have exceptional communication, analytical and organizational skills.

Your main duties will include:

  • Regularly visit transportation construction sites to visually inspect work in progress, including grading/drainage, roadway paving, sidewalk/accessible ramp construction, bridge construction, erosion control, signage installation, and other relevant aspects of transportation projects
  • Verify that materials used on the project meet specifications by checking material condition/documentation, conducting field tests, and ensuring proper material handling.
  • Keep inspection records and prepare reports; lead the project documentation and closeout process;
  • Mentor and coach less experienced staff;
  • Coordinate and schedule day-to-day inspections, facilitate communication between the parties involved in the delivery of capital projects including County staff, consultant engineers, and construction contractors;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on standards, practices, laws and regulations;
  • Review project plans and specifications;
  • Plan and administer multiple smaller projects or parts of a larger project;
  • Coordinate project safety and quality assurance functions; and
  • Assist in developing standards and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Equivalent to an Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering, surveying technology, construction management, or related field (will accept relevant experience in lieu of a degree)
  • Three (3) of experience in public works bridge and/or roadway inspection
  • Valid driver license

Preferred Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Federal Project Inspection and Documentation
  • Supervision/Coordination of staff
  • Road/Bridge Inspection (including Movable Bridges)
  • ODOT Inspection Certification in the following; ADA Curb Ramp, Asphalt Pavement, Bridge Construction, Environmental, and/or General Inspection (or similar DOT certification)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Type of Position: This hourly, union-represented position is eligible for overtime.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. There may be some flexibility with the regular start and end times. Schedule can vary based on construction.

Telework Type: Ad-hoc telework - there may be opportunities for some work tasks to be performed from home on an ad-hoc basis, but this position is expected to perform the majority of their work from the County location above or from the field.
