POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Applicants must be available to travel for field reviews, training, meetings, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary. A valid driver's license is required and must be maintained.


THE ROLE

As a Transportation Technician Trainee, you will assist a MESU Transportation Materials Technician 3 with the inspection and testing of materials and structures used in the construction of transportation facilities. The positions are based at the Rocky Hill Laboratory where the responsibilities include the testing and inspection of materials and their components. Current positions are available in the asphalt mix area, physical testing area, and soils and aggregate area, however the result of interviews may be used to fill other Transportation Technician Trainee positions as needed. Other related roles and responsibilities will be assigned as needs of the Unit and section evolve.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY

The Transportation Technician Trainee position has a one-year training program. Upon successful completion of the training program, the selected candidates will be promoted to the target class of Transportation Technician. With continued successful performance as a Transportation Technician for one year, the selected candidates will be promoted to Transportation Materials Technician 2.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in performing basic technical work in support of transportation projects.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY


  • Knowledge of basic construction methods and materials; 
  • Skill in use of construction related equipment and instruments and computer applications; 
  • Ability to
    • perform mathematical computations; 
    • create, read and interpret scales, diagrams, plans, specifications and drawings; 
    • prepare accurate drawings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE


Two (2) years of experience involving the inspection of transportation construction projects; or testing of transportation materials; or bridge safety inspection.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED


  • College training in construction management, engineering technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.
  • Possession of at least Level II certification, from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), in one of the following Civil Engineering Technology Programs may be substituted for the General Experience:
    • Transportation Construction Inspection Program - Highway Construction Inspection
    • Construction Materials Testing Program - Asphalt, Concrete or Soils
    • Transportation Program - Highway Materials, Highway Construction Inspection or Bridge Safety Inspection.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience independently performing field and/or laboratory visual inspection, sampling, and testing of construction, maintenance, and other materials.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 Including Outlook, Microsoft Excel, creating spreadsheets, inputting data, and creating graphs.
  • Experience performing mathematical computations and preparing construction materials related documents such as material testing reports and inspection reports.
  • Experience communicating verbally and in writing with teammates and stakeholders of varying levels.
  • Possession of Technician Certification from the NorthEast Transportation Training and Certification Program (NETTCP) or equivalent in the relevant area of testing for the position.
  • Experience with and knowledge of materials components properties and their production and testing in the relevant areas of focus of the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS


Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
