The Visual Art Department at Holyoke Community College seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member to bring vision and innovation to our Graphics Option and Graphic Design Certificate Programs and to help advance the college’s efforts to ensure equitable outcomes for all HCC students. Candidates should bring a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in their teaching practice. This position provides instruction in a wide range of graphics content, including graphic design practices and principles, typography, branding, web/interactive design, and motion graphics. Candidates should have expertise in current graphic design software and be able to teach courses demonstrating this software for students. Faculty members also participate in department initiatives to better prepare art students for transfer and careers and have an interest in actively engaging with the communities HCC serves.  Candidates for this position should demonstrate a record of excellence in college-level teaching as well as interest in working collaboratively with colleagues, transfer institutions, and community organizations. The successful candidate will be expected to build and reinforce relationships with relevant local businesses as well as transfer institutions, in order to support students’ pursuit of transfer and career opportunities. This is a fully on-campus position. 

Under the direction of the Dean of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, primary responsibilities include the following:

1. Teach foundation and advanced courses in all areas of Graphic Design, as well as foundation courses in two-dimensional design as needed.

2. Remain knowledgeable about developments and trends in the field, and proficient in current Graphic Design software and practices.

3.   Coordinate and advance the Graphics Program by designing new and updating existing courses to maintain an evolving, contemporary, and forward-looking curriculum.

4.  Contribute to department efforts to recruit and retain students.

5.   Supervise student work to support design and production of promotional materials for selected fine and performing arts events.

6.  Supervise student work on the college’s biannual art and literary journal, Pulp City.

7.   Work with IT staff to manage and maintain the computer lab and equipment in the main Graphics classroom.

8.   Provide academic advising for Graphics and Visual Art majors.

9.  Meet with and assist students during office hours.

10. Participate in shared governance committees, as well as other committees, task forces, and sub-committees.

   11. Provide college service as required by the MCCC contract.
 

REQUIRED:  

  • Advanced degree in Graphic Design or related field completed by August 15, 2025;
  • Minimum two (2) years of teaching Graphic Design at the college level as instructor of record;
  • Evidence of ongoing professional creative practice;
  • Theoretical and technical expertise in graphic design practices and principles, typography, branding, web/interactive design, motion graphics, evolving computer programs, and digital design tools;
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe XD;
  • Knowledge of contemporary and traditional methods in the field, both digital and analog;
  • Experience working successfully with a diverse student body;
  • Demonstrated excellent teaching skills, including varied pedagogical strategies;
  • Experience with culturally responsive pedagogies;
  • Active engagement with current issues in art and art instruction;
  • Excellent communication skills.
NOTE:  A teaching demonstration will be a required part of the interview process.

PREFERRED: 
  • A record of teaching excellence in graphic design at a community college or at the first year/sophomore college level;
  • Professional experience in the field of Graphic Design;
  • Proficiency in animation.

Full-time, tenure-track MCCC/MTA position

Salary:  Minimum $54,820-$64,159 (subject to salary increase effective January 1, 2025).  Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.
